The Augustinian Monastery (colloquially Augustinian ) in Schwäbisch Gmünd is a former monastery of the Augustinian Order of Hermits on today's Münsterplatz in the immediate vicinity of Gmünder Münster in the old town.

history

In 1284 the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd allowed the Augustinian Order of Hermits to stay in the city, to purchase land and to build on it. At this time the construction of the first monastery buildings began. In the 15th century the monastery was traced back to a Staufer founding in 1140, but there is no reliable evidence for this assumption. On the other hand, the o. G. Municipal permit from 1284 and a permit from 1285, in which Bishop Hartmann of Augsburg allows the Augustinians to celebrate and preach services in Schwäbisch Gmünd. In 1288 there was a dispute with the rector of the parish church, who was in "spiritual competition" with the religious clergy, in which even the demolition of the monastery church under construction was demanded. On December 13, 1288, Pope Nicholas IV decided in favor of the Augustinians and reversed the excommunication pronounced by the Augsburg bishop . Twenty years later, King Heinrich VII asked the city to support the Augustinians in their expansion in Gmünd.

In 1535, Emperor Charles V took quarters in the Augustinian monastery, which at that time consisted of medieval half-timbered buildings and was probably in good structural condition. After the church underwent another renovation in 1680, a catastrophic condition of the monastery and the church buildings was determined as early as 1732. In 1738, the master builder Christian Wiedemann began building the new baroque monastery, which was completed in 1747. In 1755 the church building was in danger of collapsing, the renovation began in 1756 and included a partial demolition of the late Gothic church. The construction work was led by Johann Michael Keller , who was the city master builder in Schwäbisch Gmünd at the time. In 1758 the renovation work was completed.

On January 3, 1803, the monastery received a decree of repeal within the framework of secularization , which resulted in the evacuation of the monastery. The Augustinians had to billet with Gmünd citizens. In 1806 the church became a Protestant garrison church and in 1817 a Protestant parish church.

Today the Augustinian monastery houses the Protestant parish church and the Schwäbisch Gmünd tax office .

Monastery church

The monastery church was a Gothic building, which was rebuilt in Baroque style after a partial demolition . The church was consecrated on Visitatio B. Mariae Virginis and Augustine . As a Protestant parish church, it only bears the name Augustine Church .

Palais Debler

After previous buildings that there in the 14th century by the Lords Adelmann of Adelmannsfelden were used was 1791 instead of the earlier building on the site to Bockgasse the Palais Debler built. It is connected to the monastery church by a cross tree. In 1827 the building went to Württemberg and in 1828 became an institution for the deaf and dumb. From 1963 to 1974 the building served as a student residence for the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education . The building has served as a tax office since 1974 , in 1980 it was rebuilt for official use, and in 1982 the tax office finally moved in.
