Mariä Namen and St. Sebastian is a Catholic branch church in the Schwäbisch Gmünd district of Degenfeld .

history

The Weißenstein city pastor Josef Mühleisen, to whose parish Degenfeld belonged at that time, as well as the architect Otto Linder , who was born in Weißenstein, were the leading initiators of the Degenfeld church building. In 1910 the chapel building association was founded. Under his leadership, construction was decided to start in 1919, with a high level of personal contribution from the population. Initially, a choir tower church in baroque forms was planned as a counterpart to the Protestant parish church . After the foundation work, construction stalled. A second attempt in 1924 failed.

The second laying of the foundation stone on August 26, 1934 should be crowned with success, the consecration could already take place on November 3, 1935. A rescued stone from the nearby pilgrimage church of St. Bernhardus , which was demolished in 1806, was used as the foundation stone . The church was built in the Catholic parish. Since a partial sale by the Lords of Degenfeld to the Wuerttembergians in 1606, Degenfeld was divided into a Protestant and a Catholic part.

On November 5, 1978, Franz Josef Kuhnle consecrated the new altar, and on June 1, 1979 the church was assigned to the Weißenstein parish of St. Michael in Weiler in the mountains .

layout

The church was provided with an outer skin made up of boulders . These were collected on the nearby cold field . In the 1930s, the architect Otto Lindner replaced the neo-baroque design planned around 1910 with architecture that was modern for that time. In addition to the three arched windows, the west facade is characterized by a large concrete cross dividing the middle window. The simple interior was mainly designed by Alois Schenk from Schwäbisch Gmünd and Emil Sutor from Karlsruhe . The altar , the tabernacle and the ambo were created by Gerhard Tagwerker between 1978 and 1982 .
