Emil Sutor served an apprenticeship in the Offenburg Bildhauerwerkstatt Simmler & Venator and attended from 1907 to 1909, the Karlsruhe art academy as a student of Hermann Volz , then at the Art Academy in Dresden at Georg Wrba to study and also after subsequent stays in Leipzig , Munich and Paris his Deepen studies.

Since 1919 he had his own studio in Karlsruhe. From 1925 to 1936 he worked with the State Majolica Manufactory in Karlsruhe . His numerous, mostly church commissions in many places of worship also stem from this collaboration. In 1928 he created a. a. the then largest free-standing mosaic statue of the Mother of God in Europe for the facade of the Frauenfriedenskirche by the architect Hans Herkommer in Frankfurt-Bockenheim . In occasion of the 1936 Summer Olympics conducted art competition he won for his reliefs "hurdler" (now in the museum in Tokyo) and "Hockey Fight" a gold medal in the sculpture competition in Category reliefs.

In 1937 Emil Sutor became a member of the NSDAP. In the Hitler years there was no demand for church art, and Sutor did a lot for the National Socialists. He created hero and war memorials and other heroic sculptures such as the "Germanic family". He designed one of his monumental SA monuments for the city of Singen. A new start with a return to church art and the reduced physicality typical of Sutor took place after the war in 1948.

In 1958 Emil Sutor modeled a version of the Bambi- Deer, the well-known German media award, as a sculptor for the Burda publishing house in Offenburg , at the special request of the owner Franz Burda . The Bambi was cast in bronze and gilded. The Sutor model remained unchanged until 1999. This side work became his most media-effective work.

Until shortly before his death he carried out numerous public contracts.
