Brother Klaus Church in Constance

The Bruder Klaus Church is a Roman Catholic religious building in the district of Petershausen in Konstanz on Lake Constance . It belongs to the pastoral care unit Konstanz-Petershausen .

history

The church was the first church that was built in Konstanz after the Second World War (completed in 1956). Brother Klaus was chosen as the patron saint , on the one hand to erect a memorial for peace, on the other hand to remember his work: It was he who mediated a dispute between Constance and the Landvogtei Thurgau in 1482 .

architecture

The simple, slightly trapezoidal structure reflects the light architecture of the 1950s. The building was made of reinforced concrete, the facade is painted white. The front is clad in the base area with brownish-yellow bricks. To the right above this three-part base is a large sculpture by the German sculptor Emil Sutor , who also created the " Bambi ". You can see the wedding at Cana , with the six jugs shown symbolizing the everyday worries of people, which Jesus Christ is supposed to transform in "Sunday worship into grace, strength and blessing for everyday life". The total of 27 colored windows at the front show visions of Brother Klaus. Behind it is a small chapel, which is separated from the church by a glass wall. To the left of the building is a slender, also white church tower. It is around 34 meters high and decorated with three rings. There are three bells and a clock in it.

Furnishing

The altar cross shows saints from the region, such as Gebhard von Konstanz , Heinrich Seuse and Brother Klaus. It was designed by the Lindau artist Willi Veit . Behind the altar there is a large-format relief by the sculptor Oscar Steidle that encompasses the entire rear wall and depicts Jesus Christ at the time of the parousia . The Reiser organ from 1960 has three manuals with 35 registers and a total of 2,402 pipes .
