Church from the south

New St. Cyriak is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Schwäbisch Gmünd district of Straßdorf .

history

From 1885 it became apparent that the former parish church Alt-St. Cyriak would be too small. Initially expansion plans were discussed and then in 1913 it was decided to demolish it. After the state conservator had successfully objected to this, a new building was sought in another location. On the south-eastern outskirts, Count Otto von Rechberg left a piece of land to the community at a reasonable price. The already involved in the expansion plans of architect Hans Herkommer created plans for the new building and conceptualized this building in the context of a possible new RAT and school building . The ground-breaking ceremony took place in September 1913, the shell was completed in February 1914 , and the church was consecrated on May 27, 1915.

In 1964 the building was renovated, with the lightening of the choir and the new glazing of the nave intervening considerably in the design of the building. In 1984/1985 a sacristy was added .

Furnishing

Interior of the church

The design of the interior defies conventional terminology. It is characterized by a barrel vault , columns of the Ionic order and a Byzantine -style choir. The painting was done by Hans Kaiser and Alois Schenk . Schenk also designed the windows in the choir. The windows of the west facade were created in 1964 by Wilhelm Geyer . The war memorial was erected in 1922 with figures by Jakob Wilhelm Fehrle . The confessionals come from the Gmünder Predigerkirche from around 1740. The remaining figures are mostly from the construction period and some from the Baroque .

The church has a choir organ and a main organ by master organ builder Peter Paul Köberle from Schwäbisch Gmünd. It bears the opus number 29 and was made in 1967.

Peal

The first bell , except for a bell that was cast by a Zolller foundry in 1864, was made in 1914 and delivered in 1942 during World War II .
