The parish church of St. Cyriakus is located in Schwäbisch Gmünd - Bettringen in the Ostalb district . It was built in Oberbettringen in 1813 on the demolished St. Cyriakus choir tower church from 1485 and is the main church in Bettringen and the parish seat of the Unterm Bernhardus pastoral care unit in the Ostalb dean's office ( Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese ).

history

In the 14th century, a first church - next to the Ottilienkirche - was built below the site on which the old rectory stands today . It was dedicated to Saint Mauritius . In 1485 a choir tower church was built, which had Saint Cyriakus as patron and served as the successor to the Mauritius church. The consecration was carried out by Auxiliary Bishop Ulrich from Augsburg .

This church lasted for 328 years, but was demolished in 1813 due to disrepair. The new St. Cyriakus Church was built on the area of the former official building of the imperial city of Schwäbisch Gmünd. This was designed in the simple round arch style by the master builder Dillenius .

A hundred years later, the church was expanded and renovated in 1913. The external form of the church has not changed since then. In 1929 the interior of the church was painted in the old style . Another major redesign took place in 1969. In 2006 the church was renovated again. After the work was completed, a fire broke out in the interior in 2007, which is why the church had to be extensively renovated and refurbished again in 2008.

In 2013, a major jubilee was celebrated as part of the parish church's 200th anniversary, which was celebrated with various larger events throughout the year. Among other things, there was a commissioned composition by Christopher Tambling for the patronage , which was performed by around 130 singers and almost 50 instrumentalists as part of the European Church Music Festival.

  • right side: Follow me! - I'll make you fishers of men. , Jesus meets Peter, Andreas, Jakobus and Johannes at the lake Gennesaret .

The stained glass windows in the apse were designed by Wilhelm Geyer in 1947 with the title Christ in the Gleam of His Saints . Saint Stephen , Saint Peter , Christ , Saint John and the church patron Cyriacus are depicted .

The church has two side chapels, the Marienkapelle in the northeast and the baptistery in the southeast. The Lady Chapel is equipped with the chest organ, a statue of the Virgin Mary that dates from the 18th century, although the crown was added in the 19th century, and a statue of Saint Anne . The Marienkapelle serves with the participation of choirs or bands as well as soloists of the orchestra, while the Tuttiorchester of the parish plays from the gallery. In the baptistery there is a statue of the Virgin Mary and a picture of the fourteen helpers in need . The baptismal font of the church can also be found here.

The church has about 400 seats, as well as some seats in the side chapels and on the organ gallery .

The Christ bell from 1504 is considered the most important bell in the church.
