The Bernhardus (also called "Spitzkopf") is a mountain in the Swabian Alb , about 8 km southeast of Schwäbisch Gmünd . With its height of 778.8 m above sea level. It is only slightly lower than the neighboring, 781.1 m high Kalte Feld , the highest point in East Wuerttemberg .
geography
The Bernhardus forms a projection of the Alb eaves to the west. It is connected to the Kalten Feld , a witness mountain , via the 630 m high Furtle Pass . While the slopes of the Bernhardus mostly belong to the Ostalbkreis , the upper part of the mountain lies in the district of Göppingen - the border delimits the summit plateau.
To the south, the Bernhardus merges into the 757.2 m high Eierberg . Between Eierberg and the Albtrauf to the east lies a steep gorge, the Glasklinge .
The summit area and north side of the Bernhardus are almost entirely wooded. The northern slope is used for agriculture up to a height of about 580 m , the western flank sloping down to state road 1160 is covered with meadows below the forest area.
chapel
The Bernhardus Chapel stands on the north-western edge of the summit plateau . It was built by those von Rechberg in 1880 and is still a popular pilgrimage destination today. Every year on August 20, the memorial day of Bernhard von Clairvaux , a pilgrimage service with several thousand participants takes place at the Bernhardus chapel .
tourism
Some regional hiking trails lead up or over the mountain. There is a parking lot for hikers at the Furtle Pass . The Swabian Alb North Rim Trail leads just east of the Bernhardus.
In 2008 a path of reflection was opened between the Furtle Pass and the Bernhardus summit : On the path there are sculptures with different pairs of terms.
The X-ing mountain bike trail leads over the Bernhardus.
