Karl-Josef Rauber
Karl-Josef Cardinal Rauber (born April 11, 1934 in Nuremberg ) is a Roman Catholic Archbishop and emeritus diplomat of the Holy See . From 1990 to 1993 he was President of the Papal Diplomatic Academy and then Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland and Liechtenstein , in Hungary and Moldova , as well as in Belgium and Luxembourg .
Life
After graduating from St. Michaels Gymnasium of the Benedictines in Metten , Rauber studied Catholic theology and philosophy at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz from 1950 . On February 28, 1959, he received the sacrament of ordination through Bishop Albert Stohr in Mainz Cathedral . He was a chaplain in Nidda and from 1962 - the year in which the Second Vatican Council began - completed a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . At the same time he attended the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . From 1966, Rauber worked in the State Secretariat as one of four secretaries to the Substitute of the State Secretariat, Archbishop Giovanni Benelli . He was mainly responsible for the German-speaking areas. Pope Paul VI awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on December 22, 1976 . In 1977 he became a Nunciature Councilor in Belgium and Luxembourg and in 1981 in Greece .
On 18 December 1982 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Iubaltiana and ordered him to the charge d'affaires and Pro-Nuncio to Uganda . Pope John Paul II himself donated him the episcopal ordination on January 6, 1983, co- consecrators were the official in the Vatican State Secretariat , Eduardo Martínez Somalo, and the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy . His motto is "Caritas Christi urget nos." (The love of Christ urges us).
On January 22, 1990, John Paul II appointed Rauber President of the Papal Diplomatic Academy. In 1991 he was given the delicate task of investigating the difficulties encountered in the diocese of Chur by Bishop Wolfgang Haas . In 1993 he returned to the diplomatic service of the Holy See as Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland and Liechtenstein (March 16, 1993 to April 25, 1997) and Apostolic Nuncio in Hungary and Moldova (April 25, 1997 to February 22, 2003). Since February 22, 2003, Karl-Josef Rauber was Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium and Luxembourg . In this function, the church leadership in Rome passed over his ternary proposals for the replacement of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels . Rauber responded with violent and open accusations against Pope Benedict XVI. when he appointed André-Joseph Léonard as Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels, against the express advice of Nuncio Rauber . Rauber considered this completely unsuitable for the office.
Pope Benedict XVI granted his age-related resignation in 2009. He resigned from the office of nuncio in Belgium on June 18, 2009, from that in Luxembourg on July 24, 2009. Rauber lives in retirement with the Schoenstatt Sisters in Ergenzingen and works as a corporate donor for the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese .
In the consistory of February 14, 2015 Pope Francis took him as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonie Anthony of Padua a Circonvallazione Appia in the College of Cardinals on.
