Pier Luigi Celata

Pier Luigi Celata (born January 23, 1937 in Pitigliano , Grosseto Province , Italy ) is retired Archbishop of Curia of the Roman Catholic Church and former diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Pier Luigi Celata received on 8 October 1961, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He obtained a diploma in canon law . In 1967, Celata entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Pope Paul VI bestowed on him on December 1, 1972 the title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) and Pope John Paul II on July 19, 1982 the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness .

On December 12, 1985, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular Archbishop of Doclea and appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Malta . The Pope personally donated his episcopal ordination on January 6, 1986 in St. Peter's Basilica . Co-consecrators were Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli and Cardinal Bernardin Gantin . On May 7, 1988, Pier Luigi Celata was also appointed Apostolic Nuncio in San Marino and on June 24, 1992 in addition to Nuncio in Slovenia . Pope John Paul II appointed him on February 6, 1995 as Apostolic Nuncio in Turkey and on April 3, 1997 as Nuncio in Turkmenistan . On March 3, 1999, Celata was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium and Luxembourg .

On November 14, 2002, Pope John Paul II appointed him Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue . He retired on June 30, 2012.

On July 23, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Vice-Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church . He succeeded Cardinal Santos Abril y Castelló and held the office until December 20, 2014.
