The former parish church of St. Coloman (rarely St. Koloman or Kolomanskirche ) is a Roman Catholic church in the former center of Wetzgau in the Schwäbisch Gmünder district of Rehnenhof-Wetzgau . The late Gothic church is dedicated to Saint Koloman .

history

In 1382, a previous church is mentioned for the first time at this point, of which remains of the wall were found in 1977/78. The current building dates from the 15th century, parts of the tower beam could be dated to 1413/14. A new consecration, probably after major repairs, took place on October 28, 1447. In 1473/74 the characteristic tower helmet was put on. The Rechberg family exercised patronage until 1552, so in 1488 the knight Ulrich von Rechberg called for donations, from which extensive renovations were made by 1496/97, such as the construction of a new roof structure , which the year 1494 above the sacristy attests to .

In 1609 and 1637 the gallery and windows were enlarged and the devastation of the Thirty Years' War removed . In 1825 the baroque high altar was replaced, in 1840 the side altars were removed. The surrounding cemetery was moved to the west in 1837. In the course of extensive renovation measures from 1871 to 1879, sculptor Lorenz Benz and glass painter Karl Bohnenberger refurbished the church. The new building and expansion plans from 1929 were discarded, instead the church was renovated in 1933/34. Contrary to the purification planned in 1968, the interior was carefully restored by Max Bader in 1977/78 . In the years 1990 to 1992 there was again extensive renovation work.

In 1970 the parish of St. Coloman Wetzgau merged with the parish of the Maria Königin Rehnenhof church, built in 1960, to form the parish of St. Maria Wetzgau-Rehnenhof . Today St. Coloman is a branch church of the parish in the pastoral care unit Limeshöhe in the deanery Ostalb . Despite the local proximity, mass is still held weekly in the St. Coloman Church.

Furnishing

The oldest components include the font from the 15th and a crucifix from the 16th century. The figure of Saint Koloman dates from around 1600. The painting Koloman's Ride from 1746, which was probably made as a side altarpiece, shows the church along with the cemetery, parsonage and sacristan's house as well as pilgrims. The evangelists from an older pulpit were made in 1750 by Franz Anton Grünewald . The church treasure of St. Coloman includes a Coloman reliquary from 1760. The pulpit and high altar date from the 19th century.

Bells

There are currently three bells in the bell tower of the church:

No. Surname diameter Casting year, location, master volume inscription
1 Colomans Bell 930 mm 1960, Stuttgart, Heinrich Kurtz b HL. COLOMANUS GUARDIAN ANGEL, / ASK FOR US TO GOD'S THRONE, / HELP IN LIFE, / HELP IN DYING / THAT WE DO NOT PERFORM; Backwards: DONATED BY THE PARISH PARISH GMUEND-WETZGAU 1960
2 Evangelist bell 810 mm 1456, Reutlingen, Hans Eger c ′ + lcvas + marcvs + mathevs + iohannes + mcccclvi (note: the spelling mistake with Lukas can be found on the bell)
3 Marienbell 670 mm 1948, Stuttgart, Heinrich Kurtz it' AVSPICE MARIA PER TENEBRAS / TEMPORVM AD LVCEM AETERNITATIS

The bell metal for the Marienglocke was found - apparently cheap - by purchasing an imperial eagle from the Nazi party rally grounds in Nuremberg . However, it turned out that it was filled with three hundred pounds of sand. The St. Kolomanus bell from 1892 with a diameter of 1000 mm, which Konrad Zoller made in Biberach, was melted down in 1940.
