Marienkapelle (Strassdorf)

The Marienkapelle is a baroque sacred building on the northern edge of the Schwäbisch Gmünder district of Straßdorf .

The Marienkapelle was built in 1718/1719 as a cloverleaf-shaped Wendelin chapel on the site of an older Wendelin chapel. In 1755 it was renamed the Marienkapelle. In 1870 an outbuilding, also built in 1718, was demolished. Repair work was carried out in 1878, 1896/1897 and from 1988 to 1990.

The chapel, derived from the former patronage of St. Wendelin, is a large corridor chapel based on the Bohemian or Bavarian model. The baroque interior contains stucco , the central building a cross vault . The baroque high altar in walnut was partially repainted by Franz Müller in 1897 , as was the gallery . Also in 1897 the late Gothic Madonna was removed and then sold and replaced by a 19th century statue of Mary. The altar grille dates from 1878 and was made by a locksmith Renz from Schwäbisch Gmünd.

The chapel also has several figures, such as St. Barbara and St. Nicholas from the first quarter of the 17th century , St. Wendelin and George from the first quarter of the 18th century, and St. Francis Xavier from the middle of the 18th century and a Johannes Nepomuk .
