Gerhard Tagwerker (born February 19, 1932 in Klagenfurt ) is a German sculptor and jazz musician . Above all, he created sacred art for over 100 churches, mostly in southwest Germany .

Life

He was born in Klagenfurt. The family moved to Teplitz-Schönau in northern Bohemia when he was two years old. After the end of the war he narrowly escaped being shot when the Germans were expelled from Bohemia. He then completed his school education in Eisenach before training as a sculptor and plasterer in Bamberg . His fields of activity were mainly in the reconstruction of the Bamberg castles and churches that were destroyed in the war. At that time he also attended evening seminars in Würzburg , where he learned bass, trombone and drums. He was then involved in the renovation of the castle church in Friedrichshafen and also worked as a musician on Lake Constance excursion boats.

In the early 1950s he came to Stuttgart , where he was involved in the reconstruction of the collegiate church . There he met Otto Hajek , who encouraged him to study art. Tagwerker first completed a degree in graphics at the Free Academy in Merz and then moved to the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , where he was a master student of Professors Peter Otto Heim and Rudolf Hoflehner . He financed his studies by performing as a jazz musician.

After completing his studies, he worked as a freelance artist, mainly designing churches in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and Bavaria. His contribution often comprised an overall concept of wall design, altars, crosses, tabernacles, baptismal fonts, figures and portals. He received many orders for church buildings from Eberhard Steim , and he also furnished numerous churches for Karl Hans Neumann .

From 1972 to 1997 he was also an art teacher at the Eduard-Spranger-Gymnasium in Filderstadt, where he founded a jazz club.

He lives and works in Leinfelden-Echterdingen.
