Hoflehner initially studied mechanical engineering in Linz from 1936 to 1938 and then architecture in Graz before taking up the stage design course at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1938 to 1939 . From 1939 to 1945 he was in military service in the German Wehrmacht . After the war he was a teacher at the arts and crafts school in Linz from 1945 to 1951.

Hoflehner did not “study” at the Vienna Academy with Fritz Wotruba from 1951 to 1954 , but at that time he was also working as a freelance artist in his studio. During this time he switched from painting to sculpture .

In the redesign of the National Council meeting room, Hofhlehner contributed the national coat of arms , made of chased steel, to the rear wall of the room , the appearance of which he freely designed artistically.

In 1955 Hoflehner made a trip to Greece . His sculptures made of welded iron then have an even greater relation to the human body with their expressive, towering forms.

In 1962 he was appointed to a professorship for sculpture at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , which he held until his retirement in 1981.

In 1968 Hoflehner created his last iron sculpture for the time being, but also carried out various large-scale commissioned works in the future, for example the bronze and steel sculpture "Fight against Cancer" in front of the main entrance of the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg in 1972 and the bronze, steel and Wengeholz designed the "figure" set up in front of the new building for the Esslingen University of Education . Influenced by the painting of Francis Bacon , he began to paint existential and critical pictures. His self-portraits (1976) and the death meditations created between 1977 and 1985 became famous.

In the fifties and sixties, Hoflehner, with journalistic support in particular from Werner Hofmann , was the main representative of modern sculpture in Austria alongside Fritz Wotruba. He was known for his iron and steel sculptures, which gained international recognition, especially in the 1960s.
