Ingrid Hartlieb describes her work as “reflections on the world that have become form, codes of human existence”. She said that her work was about “the fragmentary nature of grasping the world, the impossibility of depicting the wholeness of the world, or of grasping only a fraction of one's own existence”. Hartlieb developed sculptures from sketches and drawings. For this she uses local types of wood, which are glued together in different layer thicknesses and brought into their final shape with a chainsaw. Hartlieb calls them a buoy , pendulum , top, niche or lifebuoy . She creates additional surface stimuli by giving her sculptures a patina made of pigment and wax. They are withdrawn from classification naturalistic or abstract . Individually or in groups or put together thematically, Hartlieb adapts them to your intentions and the exhibition spaces. Ingrid Hartlieb works mainly with wood. Her oeuvre includes a few sculptures made of cast iron or steel .

“Ingrid Hartlieb proves [...] to be one of the most important artists of her generation. This is also evident in the examples of her sculpture in public space, […], including, as an exception, a steel sculpture in the Eislingen city roundabout or a five-by-five-meter vessel on Long Island: »Only to the open sky«. Hartlieb's work is located on the floor, with a view of the sky. "

Ingrid Hartlieb also developed stage sets for the Tigerpalast variety theater in Frankfurt am Main .
