history

In the area of Gennevilliers traces of the first settlement from the Neolithic Age could be found. Celtic, Roman and Merovingian coin finds also show continuous settlement at this point. The Seine played an essential role in the development of Gennevilliers over the centuries. Agriculture, cattle breeding, fishing and hunting formed the economic basis. Until the establishment of its own parish in 1302, the area of Gennevilliers belonged to Asnières .

In 1740 and 1910 Gennevilliers was badly damaged by floods after dam breaches. In 1746 the Duke of Richelieu had a castle built here by Servandoni. There he received Maria Leszczyńska , Louis XV. and Madame de Pompadour to hunting parties in the nearby woods. The first private performance of the comedy Le mariage de Figaro (Figaro's wedding) by Beaumarchais took place in the country house of the Count of Vaudreuil on September 27, 1783 .

At the end of the 19th century, numerous impressionists ( Cézanne , Claude Monet , Berthe Morisot , Renoir and Alfred Sisley ) visited Gennevilliers, where the Manet family owned property and the painter Caillebotte lived. Here, as in the Argenteuil opposite , many of her works were created.

The industrial development of Gennevilliers only began at the beginning of the twentieth century. When it was connected to the railway network in 1909, Gennevilliers became the industrial center of the region. Suppliers to the automotive industry in particular settled here. In the 1920s and 1930s, the rather rural community transformed into a workers' town, with an influx of people from all over France and North Africa. Today the independent municipality has merged with Paris as a suburb.
