Suresnes [ sy'ʁɛn ] is a French city with 48,264 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Arrondissement of Nanterre , in the Hauts-de-Seine department of the Île-de-France region , 12 km from central Paris . The inhabitants are called Suresnois .

The municipality has been characterized by industry since the 19th century and is one of the most densely populated in Europe. Not far from numerous high-rise buildings, there is also a significant proportion of permanent residential buildings of all kinds. There is a theater, the Théâtre Jean-Vilar .

Suresnes is located west of Paris, on the left of the Seine twelve kilometers from the center of Paris, on a hill, directly opposite the Bois de Boulogne , five kilometers from Nanterre and twelve kilometers from Versailles .

Suresnes is surrounded by Puteaux and Nanterre in the north, Paris in the east, Saint-Cloud in the south and Rueil-Malmaison in the west.

history

The Celts already had a place of worship at Mont Valérien . In 1844 a fortification, the Fort du Mont-Valérien , was built here. In the Franco-Prussian War there were several battles there, including the Battle of Buzenval .

From 1898 the Darracq car factory was located in Suresnes, which was taken over by Talbot-Lago in 1935 .

During the Second World War , 1008 people were executed at the fort in the German name . On June 18, 1960, President Charles de Gaulle inaugurated a memorial, the Mémorial National de la France combattante . A US armed forces memorial to victims of World War I is also located here today.

In 1974, during the Franco dictatorship, an exile congress of the Spanish socialist PSOE took place in Suresnes, at which the future Prime Minister Felipe González was elected Secretary General .
