Cholon (alternatively Holon , Hebrew חולון, Arabic حولون) is a city in Israel in the Gush Dan metropolitan area south of Tel Aviv . It borders on Bat Jam to the west and Rishon leTzion to the south .
Cholon is one of the largest cities in Israel. The city is an industrial suburb of Tel Aviv. It is the second largest industrial zone in Israel after Haifa . The city is home to almost half of the Samaritan community.
history
Cholon was named after the sand (Hebrew: Chol) on which it was founded and at the same time after a city in the territory of the Yehuda (Judah) tribe (Joshua 15:51). In the urban area are the remains of the ancient city of Azor . The settlement of Cholon was founded in 1934 . In 1950 it received city administration status .
There is a small Samaritan community in Cholon .

Sports
Cholon has a well-known basketball club called Hapoel . The city's most famous football club is Zafririm ; this club has played in the Israeli third division since 2004.
The Israeli soccer player Ben Sahar was born in Cholon and played at Hertha BSC in Berlin , among others .
Culture
Cholon is the site of the annual Israeli Song Days ( Yeme Zemer ). A cultural highlight is the annual musical summer school organized by Daniel Barenboim .
Cholon has a well-known children's museum, the Holon Children's Museum in which u. a. Blindness and deafness can be simulated, one of the largest public libraries in the country ( Mediatech ), a design museum designed by Ron Arad since 2010 , the Egged bus museum with over 60 historic buses from the time of Israel's emergence and the national comic book Museum ( Israeli Museum of Caricature and Comics ). The Israeli Center for Digital Art has also been in existence in the Jessy Cohen district since 2010 . A special feature of the CDA is that it actively involves the neighborhood, which is characterized by former immigrant families with low incomes, in its activities.
