Expansion of the Gush Dan

Gush Dan ( Hebrew גוש דן) is the agglomeration of the Israeli city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa . "Gush" is the Hebrew term for "block" ( Hebrew גוש). Dan was one of the sons of Jacob . According to the Tanach , the area around the ancient port city of Jaffa, part of today's twin cities Tel Aviv-Jaffa, was owned by the Dan tribe (one of twelve tribal areas in biblical Israel). Accordingly, "Gusch Dan" means in German about "Dan-Stadt-Block" or "Dan-agglomeration".

While public bus transport used to be handled by the Egged cooperative in practically all of Israel , the conurbation around Tel Aviv was under the concession of the Dan bus cooperative . Accordingly, “Gush Dan” also means the “concession area of the Dan bus cooperative”.

Geographical expansion

Only the narrow agglomeration around Tel Aviv is referred to as “Gush Dan” . Only those cities that merge seamlessly and have grown together are counted. Since the Tel Aviv metropolitan area has grown massively since its inception, new cities have gradually been added over the years.

Originally the "Gush Dan" consisted of the cities of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Ramat Gan , Bnei Berak , Giv'atajim , Cholon and Bat Jam . In the past few years the cities of Rishon LeZion , Petach Tikwa , Givat Shmuel , Kirjat Ono , Gane Tikwa and Savjon have been added. Herzlia , Ohr Jehuda and Jehud are also sometimes added.

Since "Gush Dan" is not a statistical region and as a term is relatively vague and variable, the population is sometimes given as 1.5 million, other times as 3.5 million.

The Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) divides the Tel Aviv area into settlement belts. The Gush Dan covers the core (Tel Aviv), the inner belt and parts of the middle settlement belt.

The entire greater Tel Aviv area, including the outer settlement belt, stretches along the Mediterranean coast from Ashdod to Netanya and in the direction of Jerusalem to Modi'in and comprises a total of 253 localities. This area, called the “Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area” by the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics, reached the 3 million inhabitant mark in 2005 (end of 2004: 2.987 million inhabitants, with an annual growth rate of 1.8%).

Population development

From 1950 to 2017, the population of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa metropolitan area increased eight-fold. A further growth to 5.3 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area is expected by 2035.
