Giv'at Shmuel ( Hebrew גבעת שמואל, also Givat Schemuel ) is a city in central Israel , surrounded by the larger cities of Ramat Gan , Bnei Brak , Kiryat Ono and Petach Tikwa . It is located in the Gush Dan , the metropolitan area of Tel Aviv . One third of the area is built on, the remaining two thirds are used for agriculture.

Giv'at Shmuel means "hill of Samuel".

history

The city was founded in 1942 by a group of immigrants from Romania under the leadership of Shmuel Pineles , one of the most important activists of the Zionist movement in Romania, and was named after him. In the first few years, many Jewish immigrants from Morocco settled in Giv'at Shmuel. In 1949 Giv'at Shmuel was constituted as a local council. The city has seen rapid growth in recent years, doubling its population between 1998 and 2005.

In the first years of its existence, the city was ruled by the Avoda Workers' Party . The German mayor Ya'acov "Jankele" Vismonski, who was Mayor Giv'at Schmuels from 1973 to 1993, established a partnership with the Hanseatic city of Stade in Lower Saxony in 1987 .

Since the 1990s, the city has been ruled by the Likud party under Mayor Zamir Ben-Ari, who, however, converted to the new Kadima party of then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2005 . In November 2008, Yossi Brodny was elected Giv'at Shmuels' new mayor. He stood in the election as a candidate for a community of voters .

A merger with the neighboring city of Petach Tikwa has been discussed in recent years . With the award of town charter by the Israeli Ministry of the Interior on November 5, 2007, this question is no longer on the agenda.

population

Giv'at Shmuel had a population of 26,023 in 2018. The population is heterogeneous and represents the ethnic, social and economic diversity that can be found in Israel. Compared to the average age of the inhabitants of Israel, the population of Giv'at Shmuel is young. The population growth is 2.6%.

Since there are few commercial jobs in the city, most of the workers commute to Tel Aviv.
