history

On May 20, 1811, the first Württemberg "school teacher seminar" was founded in Esslingen am Neckar. Bernhard Gottlieb Denzel was appointed its first rector , who was guided by the reform pedagogy of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi . In 1933 the seminar was dissolved and replaced on May 5, 1935 with a uniform regulation of elementary school teacher training in Germany by a college for teacher training . In 1942, academic teacher training was abolished and replaced by a teacher training institute . From 1947 the facility was temporarily referred to as the "Pedagogical Institute". On October 1, 1950, this name became the official name. In 1952, a factory teachers seminar was attached. In 1958, the state parliament of Baden-Wuerttemberg decided to set up colleges of education and as part of this law, the "Esslingen University of Education" was opened on May 29, 1962. The university had a simultaneous character, it was given the status of a scientific university in 1971 by the law on the legal status of universities of education and in 1979 it was granted the right to award doctorates (Dr. päd.).

At the end of March 31, 1984, the Esslingen University of Education was closed due to a change in the law of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament .
