Helmut Georg Schütz (born March 18, 1938 in Nieder-Wöllstadt ) is a German art scholar and author.

Career

While studying to become a teacher at the Pedagogical Institute in Darmstadt (1959–1962), he received significant impulses from Hans Roosen (painting, printmaking, art theory). From 1962 to 1963 he was assistant for art and craft education at the Pedagogical Institute in Darmstadt and at the University of Frankfurt. From 1963 to 1967 he taught at the Park School in Rüsselsheim. 1967 to 1968 he studied art history, classical archeology, philosophy and pedagogy at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, 1968 to 1974 art history, pedagogy and philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt . From 1969 to 1971 he headed the documentation office for the Conference of Universities of Education at the Frankfurt office. 1974 Doctorate in the field of educational sciences as Dr. phil. with the dissertation : On the theory of the aesthetic object and its didactic relevance. 1974 call at the Pedagogical University Esslingen as a lecturer for art education. 1977 to 1981 professor of art education at the Esslingen University of Education. 1981 Professor for Didactics and History of Fine Arts at the Karlsruhe University of Education . 2001 release from teaching and university self-administration. Since then active as a freelance art mediator and writer.

Scientific work

During his studies in Mainz and Frankfurt Schütz reduced his artistic activity, at the beginning of the 1980s he stopped working entirely in order to concentrate entirely on scientific work. Didaktische Ästhetik (1975) represents the autonomous attempt to bring together the university disciplines of art history, philosophy and education in a theory of aesthetic education. Schütz then showed in a large number of individual investigations that the historical dimension as well as the material and the tools are also highly didactically relevant. The work monograph Sphinx Beckmann (1997) was created as a model case of an original viewing of art. A critical examination of media art viewing that spanned over three decades resulted in the historical monograph Art and Analysis of Viewing (2002). For Schütz, art didactics was never a compendium of methodologies and justification concepts for art teaching in schools, but rather a comprehensive theory of art education. His lectures and introductory texts in exhibition catalogs on contemporary art are to be understood in this sense.

Private
