geography

The place is located at an altitude of 440 m and has a municipal area of approx. 1,175 ha.Framed by the Hornberg (683 m) in the southwest, the Bernhardus (778 m) and Falkenberg (776 m) in the south and the Bargauer Horn (754 m) in the east is Weiler in a basin , the slopes of which are characterized by orchards and which widens towards the north to Betttringen . The Strümpfelbach flows through the village and meanders through the valley meadows from the northern end of the village past the grounds of the Haus Lindenhof Foundation , an institution for people with mental and multiple disabilities, to the north towards Bettringen and Schwäbisch Gmünd . To the south, the Furtle Pass leads between Bernhardusberg and Hornberg at an altitude of 630 m above sea level from the basin towards Degenfeld and Weißenstein .

The St. Bernhardus pilgrimage chapel in honor of the namesake Bernhard von Clairvaux has been located on the local mountain Bernhardus of the village since 1880 . It stands at the point where the high altar of the former pilgrimage church was. This large baroque church was built between 1730 and 1733 and was the destination of the annual pilgrimages on the name day of the patron saint , until the pilgrimage in 1806 at the instigation of Joseph Alois Rink was moved to the Rechberg and the church and several neighboring houses (an inn and two residential buildings ) was finally demolished and removed from 1809. The local mountain was also the inspiration for the naming of the pastoral care unit Unterm Bernhardus , to which hamlets in the mountains belong to the Catholic parishes in Bargau , Bettringen and Degenfeld .

In the center and there at the geographically highest point of the town is the Church of St. Michael the same Catholic parish and the directly attached rectory , the entire complex is visible due to this elevated position. In the immediate vicinity of the church are the cemetery of the community, the kindergarten and the elementary school , and only a few buildings away the former town hall (today: district office). On the north-western outskirts of the village, the Bernhardushalle, a multi-purpose hall, and the new sports field with a home for athletes, were built between 1993 and 1994 on the site of the former soccer field.

The hamlet in the mountains includes the smaller suburb of Herdtlinsweiler, as well as the farms Bilsenhof, Giengerhof ( Stubenberg Castle ), Krieghof, Oberer Haldenhof, Ölmühle, Steinbacher Höfe and Unterer Haldenhof.

Weiler in the mountains is currently (as of June 10, 2015) represented politically by mayor Bernhard Feifel.

history

Hamlet in the mountains was first mentioned in 1345 as "Wyler in the mountains". In an interrogation of witnesses in 1579, a seventy-year-old hamlet reported that his hometown was formerly called “Weiller im Rebennthal”. Other sources speak of “Weiller zum Rebenthal” and “Weiler im Raubenthal”. Like Straßdorf , the place belonged partly to Rechberg and partly to the imperial city of Schwäbisch Gmünd . In 1581 the Rechbergers sold their part to the imperial city, which from then on was the sole ruler. The place belonged to the Bettringen office and came to Württemberg in 1802 with Schwäbisch Gmünd . Initially administered from Bettringen , in 1819 it became an independent municipality within the Oberamt Gmünd .

On January 1, 1971, Weiler in the mountains was incorporated into the town of Schwäbisch Gmünd.
