geography

Geographical location

Herlikofen is located about four and a half kilometers northeast of Schwäbisch Gmünd on a narrow lias slab that drops steeply to the Rems .

In the north, Herlikofen borders on Täferrot . To the northeast lies the community of Leinzell , to the east Iggingen and the suburb Brainkofen . In the south lies Herlikofen's former suburb of Hussenhofen . Lindach borders in the west, and finally the town of Schwäbisch Gmünd borders Herlikofen in the south-west.

history

Numerous traces of the Romans can be found on the municipal area . From the middle of the 2nd century onwards, the area was part of the Roman Empire for about 100 years. The Rhaetian Limes ran straight through today's town from the Schiessal valley in a straight direction to the east. The course of the Roman border wall is traced today from the southern edge of the “Am Limes” road . The remains of a Roman watchtower served as the foundation for the dungeon chapel , which was built in 1764 . To the west of Herlikofen, not far from today's local border, was the Hintere Orthalde small fort .

The place is mentioned in a document in Schwäbisch Hall , dated April 28, 1225 by King Heinrich , in which a Růdegerus de Herlekoven known as a " knight " is mentioned. The local nobility, who presumably owned a castle to the west of the village, apparently later moved to Gmünd, as a document issued in 1296 for the Adelberg Monastery suggests.

From the 14th century onwards, numerous goods in the village were in spiritual possession. The Dominican nunnery of Gotteszell , the Heiliggeistspital (1422) or the preacher monastery (1439) received property rights in the place , mostly from civil hands .

In the middle of the 16th century, the imperial city of Gmünd gained complete control of the village through the exchange of goods that were formerly Waibelhubiger from the legacies of Limpurg . From then on, Herlikofen belonged to the Imperial City of Iggingen . In 1802 Herlikofen came to Württemberg with Gmünd . In 1819 the municipality of Herlikofen was formed and expanded to include Hirschmühle and Hussenhofen. Zimmer and Hirschmühle were not incorporated from Oberböbingen to Herlikofen until 1938. On January 1, 1969, Herlikofen was incorporated into Schwäbisch Gmünd with its districts of Hussenhofen, Zimmer , Hirschmühle and Burgholz, which from then on form a separate district.
