Johann Anwander (born February 7, 1715 in Rappen, today Unteregg municipality , Unterallgäu district ; † November 16, 1770 in Lauingen , Dillingen district on the Danube ) was a German rococo painter and fresco artist .

life and work

Anwander was the head of a family of artists that included Johann Baptist Anwander . He was born the son of a farmer and probably received his education in Ottobeuren or Mindelheim monastery . In 1740 he married Maria Franziska Seser, the daughter of the Lauingen councilor Johann Kasper Seser. As early as 1739 he acquired the civil rights of Lauingen. The house that Anwander bought still exists today at Herzog-Georg-Straße 21, in the immediate vicinity of the Schimmelturm. Between 1740 and 1764 Maria Franziska gave birth to twelve children, only three of whom were older.

Anwander worked at times mainly in the area of the ore monastery of Bamberg . His works, paintings and frescoes can be seen in more than 50 churches in southern Germany. One of his most famous works is the painting of the facade of the old Bamberg town hall , which has now been lost . The monumental ceiling paintings in the former Dominican church in Schwäbisch Gemünd (today largely destroyed) are also highlighted in the literature . Two larger representations are ascribed to him for the former Benedictine Abbey of Scheyern : “Birth of Christ” and “Handover of St. Cross particles to the Abbot 1156 ”.
