Thierry Mechler
Thierry Mechler (* 1962 in Mulhouse ) is a French composer and organist . He is titular organist at the Cologne Philharmonic and professor for organ playing and organ improvisation at the Cologne University of Music and Dance .
Life
Thierry Mechler studied organ at the universities of Strasbourg with Daniel Roth and Paris with Marie-Claire Alain , improvisation in Paris with Jacques Taddei and piano with Hélène Boschi . From 1986 to 1989 he was a lecturer at the State College of Music in Annecy . In 1997/98 he was teaching at the Folkwang University in Essen. Mechler has been a concert organist and pianist around the world since 1989 and has made numerous recordings.
In 1984 Mechler became titular organist of the pilgrimage basilica of Our Lady of Thierenbach in Alsace, and from 1991 to 1999 he was titular organist of the cathedral in Lyon . From 1992 he also worked as organist and artistic director of the international organ cycles in the Maurice Ravel Auditorium in Lyon. In 1998 he moved to Cologne, where he became a professor for organ; since 2002 he has also been the organist of the Cologne Philharmonic .
Mechler has acted as a juror in many competitions, including the ARD competition in Munich, and holds master classes and seminars on historical performance practice .
Prices
- 1981: First prize with distinction at the International Organ Competition in Paris.
- 1985: First Prize Excellence with distinction in Paris.
- 1986: First Virtuosity Prize with distinction from Marie-Claire Alain in Paris.
- 1987: Composition prize for a Te Deum for organ, member of the Composers Society.
- 1991: European sponsorship award in Dresden.
