Hubert Beck (born October 13, 1935 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ; † May 29, 2011 there ) was a German organist , conductor and university lecturer .

Life

Beck studied at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart and passed the exams in the field of church music with excellent results. He completed the Kapellmeister class with Hans Müller-Kray and learned from Leopold Hager and István Kertész , among others .

From 1961 to 2001 Beck taught music at the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education , and was also a lecturer at the Rottenburg Catholic University for Church Music . He gained fame primarily as a choir and orchestra conductor and as a minster organist at the Gmünder Münster , so he founded the Philharmonic Choir Schwäbisch Gmünd in 1967 and in 1971 as a co-founder of the municipal music school . In order to have suitable instrumental accompaniment for his lavish concerts, he expanded the Gmünder Chamber Orchestra to a symphony orchestra , the Philharmonie Schwäbisch Gmünd , which he directed until 2002 and finally handed it over to Tarmo Vaask .

In 1987, with the International Organ Summer , he laid the foundation stone for the internationally important European Church Music Festival , which he initiated with the Mayor of Schwäbisch Gmünd , Wolfgang Schuster and Ewald Liska, in 1989 and in which he was active until his death. Another area of ​​activity for Beck was the design of arrangements for organs, for example in the Catholic Holy Cross Church in Uhingen . His best-known arrangement is the cathedral organ in Gmünder Münster , which he implemented with Hans-Gerd Klais from the Klais organ manufacture .

Beck was buried in the Dreifaltigkeitsfriedhof in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

The church music director and organ improviser Stephan Beck is his son.

Honors

On the first anniversary of Hubert Beck's death in 2012, the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd and the management of the European Church Music Festival announced that the first prize of the international competition for organ improvisation in honor of the deceased co-founder will be renamed the Hubert Beck Prize . It was first awarded during the 2013 festival.
