Prize for democracy in the company
The Democracy in Business Prize was first announced by Arbeit und Leben NRW in 2009 and is awarded every two years. The central idea of the prize is to honor initiatives, projects, people or actions that have promoted participation and democracy in companies.

Tender
Individuals, teams and groups as well as committees (works and staff councils, representatives for the severely disabled, youth and training) for innovative forms and models of participation in the company, equality projects, the establishment of works or staff councils, representatives for the severely disabled or youth and projects that strengthen workers' rights.
A jury will decide on the award of the prize . The jury has agreed on the selection and a. The following criteria must be taken into account: Participation-oriented and innovative character of the activity, promotion of young talent, gender equality, willingness to take risks and conflict, promotion of participation in the company.

First Prize Democracy in Business 2017
- Works council of the SMS Group Hilchenbach with a seminar concept on group-related misanthropy, which is firmly integrated into the training plan.
Second Prize Democracy in Business 2017
- Memet Özcan, chairman of the works council of the BAUHAUS branch in Witten, advocates the establishment of a works council inside and outside the company against massive resistance.
- Nils Henningsen, Chairman of the Works Council at Postcon in Mönchengladbach, also campaigned against delaying tactics by the lawyer hired by the employer and for the establishment of a works council.
Third Prize Democracy in Business 2017

First Prize Democracy in Business 2011
- Kornelia Dubbel - As an outstanding personality on both the staff and works council, she has represented the interests of her colleagues extremely successfully for 35 years. Her speeches at the annual general meetings of Deutsche Telekom AG are particularly impressive, at which she appears with a power of attorney for thousands of employee shareholders and presents the situation and position of the employees with clear, bold words.

- Youth and trainee representation of the city of Bochum, which has succeeded in opening up future prospects for young colleagues through the innovative development of a new training concept and exceptional commitment.
- Works council Siemens Nokia Networks Region West, who impressively implemented democracy in the company during the successful merger of two companies and their works council bodies.
2009
First Prize Democracy in Business 2009
- Sascha Hartmann, youth and trainee representative at Atlas Copco Construction Tools in Essen. Through public campaigns, he succeeded in ensuring that apprentices who had completed their qualifications were taken on despite contrary plans by the company management. The solidarity of older colleagues was organized and the possibilities of the new media were used.
Second Prize Democracy in Business 2009
- Thomas Heinemann, chairman of the employee representatives of the Christian Youth Village Association in Dortmund. He succeeded in initiating a process of democratization in his company and enforcing agreements with management on an equal footing.
- The works council of the Hering Bau Group. It stands for “lived democracy” in the company and social responsibility beyond the company's area. Numerous innovative models and their implementation are particularly convincing examples of democracy in the company.
