Rainer Schmeltzer (born January 7, 1961 in Lünen ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2015 to 2017 he was Minister for Labor, Integration and Social Affairs for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

education and profession

After receiving his secondary school leaving certificate, Schmeltzer trained as a housing manager from 1977 to 1980 and then worked as a housing manager (from 1985 as a housing specialist) from 1980 to 1992 at the Dortmund non-profit housing company.

From 1992 to 1995 Schmeltzer was the trade union secretary of the ÖTV in the office of the main board in Berlin . From 1995 to 2000 he was union secretary of the ÖTV in the Unna district administration. Schmeltzer joined the ÖTV in 1979.

Schmeltzer is married and has one child.

politics

Schmeltzer has been a member of the SPD since February 1977. As such, he held various positions as a board member or deputy chairman or chairman in local SPD and Juso clubs. Among other things, he has been on the board of the SPD local association Lünen-Niederaden since 1996 and was its deputy chairman from 1998 to 2002.

From 1997 to 2002 Schmeltzer was chairman of the Working Group for Employee Issues (AfA) in the Unna sub-district and from 2002 to 2006 he was chairman of the AfA state association in North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1989 to 1992 he was a member of the board of directors of the AfA sub-district of Dortmund.

Since June 2, 2000 Schmeltzer has been a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, initially for the Unna III - Hamm II electoral district and since 2005 for the Unna II electoral district and in 2005 deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group there.

On September 21, 2015, he was appointed Minister for Labor, Integration and Social Affairs of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia with effect from October 1, 2015 . His term of office ended in June 2017. He is still a member of the state parliament as a directly elected candidate in the Unna II state electoral district .

On June 19, 2019, Schmeltzer was nominated as a candidate for the 2020 mayoral election by the SPD local association in Lünen .
