The Rheinaue Friemersheim nature reserve is located on the left bank of the Rhine in the Rheinhausen district of Duisburg , Friemersheim district . Designated since July 27, 1979 and expanded in 1991, it now covers 262 hectares.
location
The nature reserve extends from the port of the former Krupp steelworks in the north over six kilometers in length and a maximum of 700 meters in width to the city limits of Krefeld in the south. In 1991 the city of Duisburg bought the property behind the dike from the Krupp company for 7.5 million DM (approx. 3.8 million euros), supported by the ÖPEL program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with 3.9 million DM, approx. 2 million euros. In 1992, with the city's new landscape plan, the area was expanded from 186 to 262 hectares. Since then, around 51,000 trees and bushes have been planted, 450 of them fruit trees with old fruit varieties .
natural reserve
The nature reserve includes:
- the natural floodplain of the Rhine
- the banks of the Rhine, which are significant in terms of natural landscape
- the dike landscape behind
- the old Rhine arm "De Roos"
- the Werthschenhof , which cultivates the surrounding areas with organic-ecological agriculture
- Stocks of extensive orchards with old varieties such as Rhenish crooked stalk or bean apple
- Hedges and head trees on the oxbow lake and above the dike
- the renatured stream "Kuppengraben"
Species worthy of protection have been identified in particular:
- Grassland dwellers
- Residents of the banks of the Rhine, who are dependent on the water level
- Wet meadow species on the Roos with mud bank inhabitants
- Types of nutrient-rich pathways and bushes
- Aquatic communities of standing and flowing waters
10% of the around 600 identified plant species are on the red list .
Landscape and landscape maintenance
The hedges, bushes and other woody areas often merge and represent important areas of shade.
The strongly fluctuating water level of the Rhine leads to a constant connection to the Roos oxbow lake during the winter floods and thus to a relatively high water level there. In the summer, on the other hand, the Ross turns into a large mudflat due to the falling water level.
The following measures are carried out to protect nature and the landscape:
- Mowing the sage meadows and verstaudenden grassland areas
- extensive sheep grazing in the foreland of the dike
- extensive cultivation of the hay meadows
- extensive grazing by cattle, and only near the farm
- Care and rejuvenation of the orchards , while preserving the dead trees as mistletoe carriers
- Guided visitors on marked paths and reduction of dog excrement through designated dog places
Wildlife
As a result of the regular plantings, the unspoilt nature has gradually returned over the past 20 years. With it, insects, small game , birds and amphibians that had become rare found their way back to the Rhine foreland.
In the area of Roos and tip trench were sixteen different dragonfly species detected, including the banded demoiselle , the Cup Azurjungfer and the Great damselfly . The overall moderate population of dragonflies is attributed to the low vegetation on the banks and the abundance of fish in the Roos. The population of locusts is also below average, which is attributed to the intensive use of grassland areas. Water-bound amphibians are almost completely absent due to the lack of spawning waters.
In addition to hares , pheasants and partridges , bats , weasels and mice have also been identified. Thanks to the pollarded willows , animal species that are rare for Duisburg, such as the little owl, settle in the Rheinaue. The orchards offer the little owl a hunting ground for its prey: mice, small birds, insects and earthworms.
