A volume of the journal of the Natural History Association of the Rhineland and Westphalia is published annually under the title Decheniana with the title addition Negotiations of the Natural History Association of the Rhineland and Westphalia . This magazine has been published since 1844, at that time known as the negotiations of the “Natural History Association of the Prussian Rhineland” in Bonn .

The association's statutes of 2010 provide for the publication of a periodical and other publication, which is to be sent free of charge to paying members. In the foreword of the first edition, the then editor and vice-president of the association, the pharmacist and chemist Ludwig Clamor Marquart , described the idea of the publication:

According to the circumstances, our negotiations deal with material from all three realms of nature, and even the auxiliary sciences of natural history are partially represented; We cannot reproach our negotiations with this circumstance, because it is precisely through this comprehensive tendency of our association that we promoted its joyful prosperity, and we will try to avoid all one-sidedness of opinion in the future as well, but not as researchers beyond the domain of the homeland The bottom of the association, as we consider the Prussian Rhine Province, to expand. "

The first edition was printed by Henry & Cohen in Bonn. Since 1935 (issue no. 91) the magazine has had the title Decheniana ; it was named in memory of the university professor Heinrich von Dechen , who was chairman of the association from 1847 to 1889.

Original works on scientific research in the fields of zoology , botany and geosciences (including geology , palaeontology , soil science and physical geography ) are published in the annual publication. An important and overarching topic is nature conservation . Most of the work is related to the area of activity of the association: North Rhine-Westphalia , Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland . Association members have the opportunity to publish their scientific and natural history work in the journal.

In 1859 the report by Johann Carl Fuhlrott on the finds in the Neandertal was published. In the anniversary year 1993 (150th anniversary of the association), Volume 146 of the magazine was published.

The monothematic Decheniana supplements have also been published by the association at irregular intervals since 1955 . By 2015, 40 editions of the supplements had been published, ranging in size from 100 to 600 pages. Among others, Kord Baeumer , Peter Boeker , Ruprecht Düll , Herbert Hesmer , Günter Matzke-Hajek , Theo Müller , Dietrich Neumann , Ferdinand Albert Pax and Fred-Günter Schroeder have been published.
