Ludwig Clamor Marquart (also Louis Clamor Marquart , born March 29, 1804 in Osnabrück , † May 10, 1881 in Bonn ) was a German pharmacist and entrepreneur .

biography

In 1835, Marquart coined the name “ anthocyanins ” for flower pigments in his treatise “The colors of flowers” .

In 1846 he founded a utensil shop in Bonn called Marquart's Lager Chemischer Utensilien , which Carl Gerhardt (father-in-law of the painter August Macke ) joined as an apprentice. In 1872, Carl Gerhardt acquired the business from his teacher Marquart. The company later changed its name to “C. Gerhardt Fabrik & Lager chemischer Apparate GmbH & Co. KG ”became the property of the Macke family, who are now the fifth generation to manage it.

Also in 1846 he founded the Dr. LC Marquart OHG , a factory for fine chemicals, disinfectants and active pharmaceutical ingredients, founded in 1892 by Dr. Alfred Kölliker was taken over, was converted into an AG in 1921 and later merged into the Degussa company . Today the plant belongs to Evonik Industries .

In the meantime, around 1865, he also joined the Société française de Wothlytypie , from which he received the license to produce pictures using the new Wothlytypie process.

He was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors and from August 1834 a member of the Botanical Association on the Middle and Lower Rhine .

On 30 November 1840 he was awarded the academic nickname I. Gmelin of a member (1481 matriculation number.) Leopoldina selected.

Marquart is also considered to be the co-inventor of baking powder as part of a project with Justus von Liebig and Eben Norton Horsford . Marquart was the first to produce baking powder industrially as part of his company.
