James Avery (actor)
James La Rue Avery, Sr. (born November 27, 1945 in Pughsville , Virginia - † December 31, 2013 in Glendale , California ) was an American actor , best known for the role of Philip Banks in the sitcom The Prince of Bel-Air became known.
Life
James Avery grew up in Atlantic City , New Jersey . He joined the US Navy shortly after high school and served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. He then moved to San Diego and became a writer for PBS . There he won an Emmy for one of his works and studied on a scholarship at the University of California in San Diego, where he received his bachelor's degree in drama and literature.
Due to his fame in various sitcoms, he was often used as a voice actor in cartoon series, including the voice of The Shredder from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series . From 1990 to 1996 he played the role of Philip Banks in the series The Prince of Bel Air , for which he was voted into the list of the 50 best television fathers of all time in a television poll . In total, he was involved in more than 170 film and television productions.
James Avery died on December 31, 2013 after complications from heart surgery. He left behind his wife and a stepson.
