action

An 800-meter-high monolith that suddenly shoots up from the ground in the desert of Bhutan and emits electromagnetic impulses calls on US scientists and the military as well as the Chinese government. There is a risk of world war ; but inside the hollow rock one is already trying to solve the mystery of evolution .

The 4 billion year old monolith, henceforth called the 'torus', apparently has healing powers: a Bhutanese boy suffering from diphtheria is cured, as is the engineer Mason Rand, who is suffering from incurable ALS . The research team wants to gain access to the monolith from the side on which there are nine circular depressions. Mason correctly suspects that these represent the nine planets . If you look at the solar system from above, every planet is at a certain position at a given time. These two-dimensional coordinates now need to be transferred to the depressions in the rock wall by rotating the 'circles' counterclockwise with the help of two robot arms.

After Rand, Dr. Having given KC Czaban and some soldiers access to the interior of the monolith, they encounter an extraterrestrial intelligence in the form of a vortex of light that can move freely in the cave. Due to disagreement, it is decided that Mason Rand and Dr. Czaban should leave the cave and watch what is going on from the control room, while the soldiers under the command of Captain Tower advance further. When the vortex of light suddenly approaches them, the soldiers shoot him, and one of their comrades disappears without a trace. He is initially pronounced dead, but just as suddenly reappears in the cave when Rand and Dr. Czaban enter the monolith again and also get to know the strange intelligence.

You are led by the alien being into a completely white room; the radio contact breaks off. A kind of holographic projection appears on the ceiling of the cave, revealing the intention of the alien intelligence: it plans a new terraforming with the help of the DNA that it brings with it - and which can also repair defective cell structures.

Meanwhile, two Chinese fighter jets have approached the monolith and shot at it. The alien intelligence then sent electromagnetic impulses that hit the aircraft and caused them to crash. Miraculously, both pilots survived the crash unscathed and were later found by the Chinese military. A Chinese commander who approached the US military provocatively, was then shot down and should have been dead, got up after a short time after his gunshot wound had healed by itself.

The US government regards extraterrestrial intelligence as hostile - in contrast to the research team. For example, by order of the American President, an atom bomb is placed inside the monolith and the countdown is initiated. All scientists and military personnel still present should move to a safe distance of 10 kilometers within half an hour. But Mason, Dr. Czaban, Capt. Tower and his troops refuse to withdraw and instead try desperately to defuse the bomb. To their horror, they learn that this is impossible. Even so, Mason and Dr. Czaban to the last to defuse the bomb on site. In the face of death, they hug and kiss one last time when the atom bomb explodes.

But the alien intelligence can absorb the explosion and save the lives of the two scientists; however, the monolith has become unstable and threatens to burst. At the last moment, Mason and Dr. Czaban to save himself by jumping from the rotating monolith onto the platform of the military research vehicle and to bring him to safety.

The monolith explodes and the alien intelligence disappears into the depths of space and seeks a new world. Dr. KC Czaban tried to get pregnant in front of the torus, but it failed several times. Back in her old life, she finds out that the torus has healed her too and she has returned from Bhutan pregnant , her father is the engineer Mason Rand. It remains unclear whether the conception took place in the torus.

Reviews

“Serially knitted science fiction film that offers nothing new; the special effects refer to an era of the profession that was believed to be long gone. "

"Neatly stolen, equipped with cliché figures and in the end just disappointing."
