Life

James Hong grew up in Hong Kong until he was ten years old before returning to the United States. He studied civil engineering at the University of Minnesota and graduated from the University of Southern California , where he first took acting classes.

After working as a civil engineer in Los Angeles County for a year and a half , he began performing in nightclubs in both Los Angeles and Hawaii . An illness caused by the strenuous job ended Hong's career in construction and opened one for him in film and television.

In 1966, Hong was a candidate for the role of Lt. Hikaru Sulu for the television series Starship Enterprise ; he had to leave the part to George Takei , however.

In 1979, Hong made his debut as a director and producer on the independent film Teen Lust ; two more feature films - The Vineyard (1989) and Singapore Sling (2001) - followed.

1982 Hong played the role of Hannibal Chew in the cult film Blade Runner by Ridley Scott .

All that is known about his private life is that he is the father of a daughter and that April Hong works as an actress like her father.
