Safe is an American action film and thriller from 2012 that was released in German cinemas on May 31, 2012. It was released in the US on April 27, 2012. Directed by Boaz Yakin , who also wrote the screenplay. The film was produced by Lawrence Bender and Dana Brunetti . In the USA, the film will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and download from September 9, and in Germany from December. Jason Statham and Catherine Chan play the leading roles.

The former policeman Luke Wright is a Cage Fighter in New Jersey . When he does not bring a rigged fight to the end as desired, his wife is murdered by the Russian mafia , and everyone close to him is suddenly in mortal danger. Luke escapes to New York City and lives an isolated life there as a homeless person. Only the 12-year-old Chinese girl Mei gives him vitality again. Mei has special mathematical skills and can easily remember larger numbers. Through her gift she got into the clutches of the triad boss Han Jiao, who kidnapped Mei to New York and entrusted her with a top secret code. While she doesn't know the meaning of the number herself, the corrupt policeman Wolf, a former colleague of Luke, is soon after her in addition to the Russian mafia. When they try to get the code out of Mei, she manages to escape to a subway station, where she meets Luke.
He was about to take his own life out of sheer desperation. Now he faces his wife's murderers who have since tracked down Mei. There is a fight in the moving subway. Mei escapes and is picked up by two police officers. After Luke can overcome this too, he escapes with Mei in the police car. They find shelter in a hotel and find out that the sequence of numbers memorized by Mei is the combination for a safe. Meanwhile, Mei's cell phone is located by the triads. A gun battle ensues, as a result of which Mei is kidnapped. Luke jumps out of the window and is followed by two police officers. He escapes and arranges a meeting with the Russian mafia using a cell phone belonging to the Russian Piotor, whom he previously killed in the subway and who he now claims to be. He kidnaps the representative of the Mafia and calls his father. Luke learns that the safe contains $ 30 million while a second contains something that is worth $ 30 million.
Luke informs the police, including Captain Wolf, and suggests a deal. He wants to share the booty with them, provided they help him get to the safe. Two policemen are killed in the subsequent showdown. Luke and Captain Wolf survive, with Luke shooting the last two policemen and then grazing Wolf in the shoulder with a graze. They get the 30 million US dollars from the safe and Luke locks Wolf in the trunk. He learns that the mysterious second item is a CD with records of the triads' money transfer paths and their links with New York City Mayor Tremello and his henchmen, including the group of police officers around Captain Wolf. Luke correctly concludes from this that Mayor Tremello is keeping a copy of the CD in his office. Luke knocks him down and arranges a place with Tremello's assistant Rosen to hand over the CD - in exchange for Mei. Rosen turns to the triads, but kills their representatives. Then he appears with Mei for delivery with Luke. The two agree to this "the hard way" and put down their pistols. But before the fight between the two, Rosen is gunned down by Mei, who cannot use the pistol that Rosen has laid down. Luke immediately kills him and tells Mei that she saved his life again.
Luke and Mei let Captain Wolf run with the son of the Russian mafia boss, send the 30 million US dollars to the Chinese and deposit copies of the CD in several banks. Then the head of the Chinese triads left the country. Then Luke and Mei drive to Seattle, where Mei is supposed to attend a school for gifted children.

The film was shot in New York City , Philadelphia , Bensalem , Radnor and Girard College in Philadelphia. The scenes that take place on the mayor's estate were filmed in Villanova . On April 4, 2012, about a month before the film was released, this property went up in flames. Filming began in October 2010 and ended in December 2010. The film opened in Ireland on November 18, 2011. After delays, the film had its US premiere on April 16, 2012 in New York. The film opened in the US on April 27, 2012 and in Germany and Austria on May 31, 2012. The production budget was 33 million US dollars and grossed 40,346,186 US dollars worldwide.
Towards the end of the film, the American film producer Lawrence Bender can be seen in a cameo as the bartender who hands the lead actor Luke Wright, played by Jason Statham , a fork with which he stabs a Russian mobster.

The role of Han Jiao was not dubbed in the German-language dubbed version. Instead, the original sound of James Hong can be heard in Mandarin , with German subtitles.
