action

Liam Liu applies for a role and is turned down because, in the opinion of the casting director, he doesn't look Asian enough . On the way home, he meets Adelaide Bourbon, a student, who is drawing a picture of him on the bus. He later meets Georgia in a bar, with whom he sleeps. He then meets again with Bourbon, who is twelve years his junior, to whom he offers a friendship.

Liu travels to Shanghai, where his grandmother died. He promises Bourbon to call her every day before leaving. In Shanghai he learns that the house he inherited from his grandmother is worth far less than he thought. He meets Micki Yang in a bar, spends a night with her and decides to live in Shanghai in the future.

Liu travels to Los Angeles , where he shares his decision with his friends. He says goodbye to Bourbon, travels to Shanghai again and learns that Yang has a boyfriend. Then he wanders through a suburb, where he meets with incomprehension. Yang explains to him that she is poor and maintains the relationship because of the money. She then advises him to return to the United States.

Liu travels back and happens to see Bourbon kissing a man. He gets jealous. Bourbon explains to him that the man is her boyfriend and that he is gay. She makes up with him.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film begins like an ordinary romantic comedy, but then it becomes more interesting. He addresses the issues of identity, relationships and cultures. The main character has to understand himself before she can love another person. The author of the "tight" script, David Ren, made the film his personal affair. Leung plays with the "bitter pungency" and breathes life into the embodied figure. The portrayal of Hayden Panettiere has as much “swing” as in Against every rule and The zebra is going on in the racing stable . For a film shot on a budget and released directly on DVD, Shanghai Kiss seems very professional. He also has “more heart and brain” than most films.

Awards

Hayden Panettiere won an award at the Newport Beach Film Festival in 2007 . Ken Leung received a 2007 special award from the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival .

backgrounds

The film was shot in Los Angeles and Shanghai . Its world premiere took place on February 8, 2007 at the European Film Market , which was followed by several other film festivals. The film was released direct on DVD in the United States on October 9, 2007.
