The zebra is loose in the racing stable (original title: Racing Stripes ) is an American - South African adventure comedy from 2005 . It was directed by Frederik Du Chau and the script was written by David Schmidt .
action
A baby zebra is accidentally left behind by a traveling circus and is found by Nolan Walsh, the owner of a small farm in Kentucky . Walsh takes the animal to the farm . There it is not only greeted by Walsh's daughter, but also by the animals that live on the farm and can talk to each other. In addition to a few chickens and sheep, there are also Franny , a goat , Tucker , the pony , the rooster Reggie and Lightning , an eternally tired farm dog on the farm . Tucker is the paternal friend who always has good advice for the zebra.
Channing, the 16-year-old daughter of Walsh, christened the zebra with the name Stripes and dreams of a career as a jockey . After all, there is a racecourse right next to her farm and her father used to train racing horses there successfully . Stripes is excited about becoming a racehorse, and races the postman every morning. He also talks regularly to the racehorses that are grazing in the pasture next door. He is challenged to a "moonlight race" by the arrogant top race horse , Trentons Pride . Although he can keep up with the racehorse for a long time, he then loses. The attractive show jumping mare Sandy consoles him, however, and Tucker also encourages him to simply train more and more disciplined. But first, since Walsh's tractor is on strike, he has to help plow the field. Since this is good muscle training for him, he willingly does it, even if the noble racehorses next door gossip about it.
One day the loud - mouthed Mooth , a pelican , lands on the farm and amuses the other farm animals with his actions and mishaps. But he helps the zebra, which as a real racehorse also needs a jockey, and puts Channings moped out of service. So she saddles Stripes without further ado, which is what he intended. However, her father is strictly against her riding, because her mother was killed in a riding accident. However, Channing convinces him and rides Stripes to her work on the racetrack. There the zebra gets to know the two flies, Buzz and Scuzz , who are constantly clowning around, but are well acquainted with all animals.
Channing succeeds in taking part in a test race with Stripes and thus secures the attention of the press. Although her father has no ambitions to get back into the racing business, he lets himself be challenged by Clara Dalrymple, the haughty boss of the racecourse. And when his animals on the farm give him the final push, he begins to train his daughter. But Stripes gets into a crisis of meaning when he suddenly has to learn that he is a zebra and not a racehorse at all. So Tucker has to speak to his conscience and Franny then manages to convince Stripes to actively train with Channing.
On the eve of the big race for the "Kentucky Open", Stripes met up with Sandy again. Suddenly Sir Trenton appears with his entourage and kidnaps Sandy so that the zebra is not tempted to take part in the race. Stripes also gets a good rub, but his animal friends stand by him and manage to free Sandy again. Stripes can now tackle the race unencumbered, which he wins in the end. He is helped by the two flies Buzz and Scuzz, who constantly give him tips from Stripes' animal coach Tucker.
As a prize, Walsh received the mare Sandy from Clara Dalrymple, who from now on lives on his farm.
reception
Carla Meyer wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of 14 January 2005, the film premise was "embarrassed" ( "disconcerting" ) However, the film offers amusing moments. Meyer praised the portrayals, especially that of Greenwood, who embodies fatherly warmth, and that of Panettiere, who seems lively and free.
Dana Stevens wrote in the New York Times of January 14, 2005 that the film could not be raised to the pantheon of unrestricted children's films ( "unlikely to ascend to the pantheon of perennially watchable children's films" ). However, what is lacking in manual dexterity would be made up for with the heart. The animation is reminiscent of a pig called Babe ; some animated faces would look unnatural.
Cinema magazine described the film as "harmless kiddie fun in the best" A pig called Babe "manner" .
"And despite all the difficult stunts, the training of the cheerful gang of animals is so successful that you would rather believe them in every family row than their human colleagues."
The film was nominated for the Teen Choice Award in 2005 in the Animated Films category.
production
The film was shot in Hollywood and South Africa. It grossed around $ 49.2 million in US theaters and around £ 5.56 million in UK theaters .
