Moritz Bleibtreu was born in Munich in 1971 to Austrian parents . His mother was the actress Monica Bleibtreu (1944–2009), his father the actor Hans Brenner (1938–1998). Bleibtreu's grandfather was the writer Renato Attilio Bleibtreu . His great-grandmother Maximiliane Bleibtreu , her sister Hedwig Bleibtreu and their parents Amalie Bleibtreu and Sigmund Bleibtreu were also actors. Bleibtreu grew up in the Hamburg district of St. Georg . He was already in front of the camera as a child, especially in the children's series Neues aus Uhlenbusch, written by his mother and Rainer Boldt, with Hans Peter Korff , who was married to Monica Bleibtreu at the time. Another role followed in Boldt's I Had a Dream , again with Korff. He had his third role in 1986 at the side of his mother in the three-part television series With My Hot Tears .

He left school with the secondary school leaving certificate (comprehensive school) in the eleventh grade - because he did not appear, he was no longer rated. He then went to Paris , where he worked as an au pair for a year and a half and learned French. After another year in Italy , he went to New York , where he took acting classes. He continued his career at the age of 21 at the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. Roles in smaller television productions followed. In 1993 he played a supporting role in Schulz & Schulz , which already showed his great versatility.

He played several major television roles in the 1990s. In 1998 he decided to “stop making television films because cinema is an active form of viewing, while television is a passive one”. He was best known for his movie roles in Knockin 'on Heaven's Door , Run Lola , Das Experiment and Der Baader Meinhof Complex . With the filmmaker Fatih Akin he shot the films In July , Solino , Soul Kitchen and Chiko .

In 2001 he received the German Film Prize for best leading actor for In July and The Experiment . For the leading role in Oskar Roehler's Elementary Particles , he was awarded the Silver Bear for best actor at the Berlinale in 2006. The actor occasionally takes part in larger supporting roles in international co-productions, such as in Vijay and I - My Wife Cheats With Me by Sam Garbarski . Moritz Bleibtreu has also appeared in films for children and young people , including the 2004 Danish film Der Fakir and The Black Brothers by Xavier Koller (2013).

In February 2015 he could be seen again in a TV production after 17 years. In the mini-series SCHULD based on Ferdinand von Schirach , he played the role of defense lawyer Friedrich Kronberg.
