In 1858 he moved to Berlin . His first works were scenes from the Schleswig-Holstein war . He then created paintings such as the Battle of Großbeeren and the Battle of Waterloo . For the German-Danish War of 1864 he designed, among other things, the painting Transition to Als . He also portrayed the battle of Königgrätz from the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he worked as a war correspondent and participated as an eyewitness in several skirmishes, especially during the siege of Paris . The victorious course of the war inspired Bleibtreu to do heroic works such as General Hartmann with the Bavarians before Paris and surrender at Sedan . Georg Bleibtreu erected a monument to General Alexander von Pape , who was revered as a war hero, in the battle of Gravelotte in the mural Sturm auf St. Privat, 1870 , which was on display in the permanent exhibition in the Berlin Hall of Fame .
He was the father of the writer Karl Bleibtreu . His son used his father's notes extensively for his military history magazine articles on the Franco-German War and the book series Illustrierte Schlachtenschilderungen , which was illustrated by Christian Speyer , which had been published since the 1890s .
