Oskar Fischel

Oskar Fischel (born July 10, 1870 in Danzig , † June 27, 1939 in London ) was a German art historian .

Life

Oskar Fischel studied art history in Königsberg and with Georg Dehio in Strasbourg , where he received his doctorate in 1896 with a dissertation on Raphael's drawings . In 1900/01 he worked on the copper engraving collection of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne , and later on the holdings of the Lipperheide costume library in Berlin . In 1914 he completed his habilitation with a study on the fine arts and the stage at Berlin University and in 1923 was appointed associate professor for art history.

The topics mentioned mark the range of his interests: research on art history with a focus on Raphael was joined by an equally intensive activity in the field of theater studies . A didactic innovation was the exercises introduced by Fischel in Berlin in front of originals in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum as a supplement to the lectures at the university. He also taught at the State Art School and at Max Reinhardt's drama school . His pedagogical and rhetorical skills were shown to advantage in public lectures and on the radio. The plan to found a theater museum in Berlin grew out of the close relationship with the stage arts. Fischel was unable to realize this project himself, but his ideas made a significant contribution to the 1927 German Theater Exhibition in Magdeburg . He also dealt with the artistic and popular education possibilities of film. His most important achievement in terms of art history, however, is the fundamental knowledge about Raphael, which he brilliantly formulated in numerous treatises. The painter Erwin Bowien (1899–1972), who mentions his teacher in his autobiography, was one of his students. Both men were supposed to meet one last time in exile in Holland, when Oskar Fischel stopped in the Alkmaar area on his way to England, fleeing from the National Socialist regime. Oskar Fischel died in London.
