occupation

The House of Larks is a feature film in international co-production, in which Italy , France , Spain , Bulgaria and Germany were involved, from 2007. It is the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Antonia Arslan .

action

The film deals with the genocide of the Armenians in 1915. It tells the events in Turkey during the First World War based on the story of the Armenian Avakian family. Aram Avakian is a large landowner living in Turkey. His brother Assadour lives as a doctor in Venice . Since the Young Turks took power in Turkey in 1913 and the war with the Russian Empire came to a head in 1915, the Turkish Armenians have been the scapegoat. Assadour is planning a trip to his homeland to visit his family. But it doesn't come to that anymore. Massacres of the male Armenian population prevent Assadour from traveling. The only help he can convey to his people is the smuggling of securities. The men of the Avakian family are murdered and the women are sent on foot into exile. On this march, Aram's daughter Nunik falls in love with a young Turkish officer who wants to save her and take her home with him. But it doesn't come to that anymore. Nunik organizes an escape for her family, but is discovered herself. To save her the agony of torture, her lover chops off her head. The children of the family can escape to Italy.

background

The film had its world premiere at the Berlinale 2007 , where it ran outside of the competition. In the run-up to the event, he caused a stir, as protests by Turks in Berlin were feared due to the issue, but they did not materialize. The film was shot in Bulgaria. In June 2007 the film was shown at the opening of the “Golden Apricot” film festival in Yerevan ( Armenia ).

Reviews

  • Der Spiegel , February 12, 2007:
The excellent actors - and the sheer incomprehensibility of what happened - prevent any sentimentality, despite the many theatrical blood and costumes. The Tavianis have succeeded in creating images that the viewer will regret seeing because they will follow him for a long time. That's the achievement and the bane of the film. He is unbearable.
  • Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , February 14, 2007:
Even in the images of the murder, the film remains dominated, it shows the bloodlust of the Turks not as a sadistic excess, but as a stiff, almost solemn slaughter. THE HOUSE OF LARCHES is an inconsistent film that fluctuates between the abysses of its subject and the constraints of a marketable narrative form and is aesthetically torn.
  • die tageszeitung , February 15, 2007: a
blend of opulent drama and sugary love story. Precisely because the film is so conventionally knitted, DAS HAUS DER LERCHEN could find a wide audience and provoke equally broad debates - especially in Turkey, where it will hopefully be shown one day.
  • Der Tagesspiegel , February 15, 2007:
“The house of the larks” is only suitable to a very limited extent as a means of enlightening debate. Infinitely dusty and declamatory in its first half, the day before yesterday sexist in its later carnal lust, when torture and escape attempts of beautiful young women have to be illustrated: With the best of political intentions, the Tavianis have created a work that soon drowned in kitsch. At least one good thing: the topic of Turkey-Armenia is no longer taboo, at least from a cinematic perspective.
