Basta. Rotwein oder Totsein is a 2004 film by Pepe Danquart . It is a humorous and dramatic Mafia satire with a macabre finish. The city of Vienna serves as the backdrop .

action

Oskar was once a big gangster who is now imprisoned. He has taken a prison guard hostage to break out of prison. On the way to Valentin, who is waiting in the getaway car, the prison psychologist Maria stops him and asks him to put down his weapon and stop his escape attempt so that after serving the rest of the custody they can both become a couple. He obeys her request and is picked up by the guards during this attempt to escape.

When he is released after his imprisonment, he meets his prison psychologist, who is convinced that everything can be sorted out with a conversation instead of violence. That's why she rejects Oskar's lifestyle and business as a protection racket. Oskar lets himself be influenced by her, becomes calmer and devotes himself more to his beloved hobby, cooking. He says goodbye to violence and lets his dubious business run rather passively. However, when Konstantin, the godfather of Vienna, learns that Oskar wants to publish a book called "Secrets - Meine Secrets ..." (incorrectly spelled "Secréts" in the film), he becomes suspicious and thinks it is a danger for them Viennese mafia scene , whereupon he instructs his foster son Valentin to shadow Oskar.

From this point on, the story takes off and there is a lot of misunderstanding. Towards the end it turns out that it is really just a harmless gourmet cookbook. At the end of the film there is a classic Mexican standoff , which is very reminiscent of Tony Scott's True Romance , in the course of which Maria is killed.

After that, the action is almost reversed by jumping in time: Oskar can be seen in the same shot as at the beginning of the film. This time he does not release his hostage, but continues on his way to Valentin, who is waiting in the escape car, and thus decides against his relationship with Maria.

Reviews

Carsten Happe criticized the film's title on schnitt.de with the words: “The crisis of the German distribution title has reached its sad climax. "Basta. Rotwein oder Totsein «screams: Avoid this cinema, I'm the worst slapstick!” Furthermore, Happe judges that the content of the film is “nothing for fine spirits, but rather hearty comedy potpourri, sometimes laconic, sometimes garish, but never tasteless or bland”.

Volker Robrahn on filmszene.de comes to a different conclusion in terms of tastelessness in relation to the kitchen scene, which is based on the film “ The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover ”: “And if then towards the end the bad boy as a living roast is decorated with vegetables and put in the oven, the question of taste mentioned is finally answered. The thumb leans significantly down here again, after having been in a somewhat milder mood in between, since the film is gaining momentum, at least in the middle section. "

Vincenzo Panza praises the cast on Filmreporter.de, but sees a kind of unsuccessful “ pulp fiction ” remake in the film : “With Moritz Bleibtreu as a dumb thug and Josef Hader as a gangster hunter,» C (r) ook «, he says Austrian original title, an excellent cast comedy. Nevertheless, “Basta. Red wine or being dead ”does not set new accents in the genre of the crook film. Both the intentionally cool look and the idiosyncratic figure drawing are elements that, after »Pulp Fiction«, should appear more than familiar. "
