True Romance (Alternative title: True Romance ) is an American film directed by Tony Scott from 1993 . The film was based on Quentin Tarantino's first script and is about the newly married young couple Clarence and Alabama who accidentally steals a suitcase full of cocaine and wants to sell it. They are followed by both the police and the mafia .

action

Clarence and Alabama meet, apparently by chance, at a Detroit movie theater where Clarence is watching a Sonny Chiba triple show. It immediately seems to be love at first sight. They both share the same interests: kung fu movies , comics and Elvis . They spend a hot night of love together and everything seems to be perfect. Afterwards, however, Alabama reveals itself as a call girl . She had been hired as a "birthday present" by Clarence's boss and had only acted out the common interests. At the same time, however, she affirms that her feelings for Clarence were not played.

A short time later, the two are already married, and Clarence learns something about Alabama's pimp Drexl, who is prone to violence against his prostitutes. After an imaginary conversation with his hero Elvis, Clarence decides to kill Drexl. However, he doesn’t tell Alabama about it, but has her give Drexl’s address on the pretext of wanting to pick up her things. Once there, Drexl and Clarence fight, in the course of which Clarence kills Drexl and his henchman Marty. He has a suitcase with Alabama's things given to him and disappears, but in the hustle and bustle forgets his driver's license with the two bodies. Back home, however, the couple found that the suitcase was full of cocaine .

You decide to sell the fabric in Los Angeles and you're on your way. Before that, however, they pay Clarence's father a visit. As an ex-police officer, he should use his old contacts and find out whether the police are on the trail of the two. His research reveals that the police do not link the murder to Clarence; so the couple feels safe. After Clarence and Alabama have moved on, however, the Mafia turns up at Clarence's father, who has found the two of them with the help of the lost driver's license and wants the stolen cocaine back. Clarence's father withholds the whereabouts of his son and daughter-in-law and is shot. The Mafia finds the address at which Clarence can be reached in LA on a note on the refrigerator of the trailer.

Meanwhile, Clarence and Alabama have arrived in LA and met up with Clarence's old school friend, Dick Ritchie, who lives with the notorious stoner Floyd. They decide to sell the cocaine to the well-known film producer Lee Donowitz and go to a meeting with his negotiator, Elliot. He phoned Donowitz, who expressed interest in the deal and called all parties to a joint meeting in his hotel room two days later.

During these preliminary negotiations, Virgil, a Mafia killer, appears in Dick's apartment and learns from Floyd which hotel Clarence and Alabama have stayed in. There he lies in wait for Alabama, who is coming home alone, and badly wounds her before, with a lot of luck, she manages to kill the gangster. When Clarence, who was briefly fetching food, enters the hotel room, he finds his wife, who is still pounding the dead killer with a shotgun. The two of them flee headlong.

At the same time, Elliot is caught by the police on the lawn. Unfortunately, he has one of the many packets of cocaine with him that he is supposed to bring to Donowitz. Then Elliot is arrested. After the police interrogate him, he agrees to play the whole gang (Clarence, Alabama and his boss Lee Donowitz) into the hands of the police.

In Donowitz's hotel room there is a big showdown ( Mexican standoff ) between the police, the mafia and Lee Donowitz's bodyguards. Clarence is shot in one eye during the shooting, but survives and manages to escape with Alabama and the money. In the final shot you can see the two of them playing on the beach with their son Elvis.

reception

Reviews

True Romance received a positive rating from 92% of the reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes , with 53 reviews rated. The overall consensus is: "Driven by Quentin Tarantino's clever script and a multitude of comical appearances, Tony Scott's True Romance is a hilarious and brutal joyride in the best possible sense." Metacritic determined a Metascore of 57 out of 100 based on 18 reviews.

The lexicon of international films described the film as a "fairytale-like description of the state of a disillusioned 'fast food' generation who want to experience everything from love to death as quickly as possible and turn the spiral of violence themselves". The “superficial directing” was criticized, which gave away “a lot of the uncompromisingness dictated by the script”, which even some “theatrical little pieces” could not make up for. The Washington Post also criticized the portrayals of violence in particular , calling it a bloody mess.

The film magazine Cinema gave it a rating of 100% and summed it up: “Hard, sexy, brutal: a thriller masterpiece.” Frank-Michael Helmke called the film on filmszene.de a “highly polished comic version of Pulp Fiction ”, saying it was one Film "with a hopelessly romantic fairy tale as the basic story, overlaid with an unrestrained, violent crime plot that never takes itself really seriously and is therefore good for some loud screamers." On kino.de , True Romance was named one of the " uncompromising highlights of the film year ”describes it as a“ snappy, blood-soaked road movie comedy full of great scenes in which a whole squad of stars can shine ”. Caryn James of The New York Times sees the film as a new definition of violence and morality in pop culture . Peter Travers of Rolling Stone is particularly impressed with the language of film and would have found it better if screenwriter Tarantino had taken over as director. The reception in the Spiegel also says that director Scott with his beautiful advertising images completely misunderstood Tarantino's story of true love in dirt and gloom, but that this is still saved by the good acting performances.

Gross profit

The film grossed approx. 12.2 million US dollars in its year of release in 1993, making it 98th in the annual ranking of the United States . In Germany , the film was released on January 27, 1994, and reached around 98,000 visitors thus not placing among the 100 most successful films of the year. Even if the film was not a commercial success at the box office , it became a cult film among lovers of this film genre , especially after the subsequent success of the screenwriter Tarantino as a director .

background

  • In the original script and the original theatrical version, Clarence dies in Lee's hotel room during the shooting. This alternative ending is included on the Special Edition DVD with the Unrated Director's Cut . Tarantino planned to revisit Alabama's character in conjunction with Mr. White from Reservoir Dogs . Joe asks Mr. White about Alabama in one scene. The film is only available in the cut version with a happy ending.
  • The film that Alabama and Clarence watch after their wedding is A Better Tomorrow II by John Woo, who is stylistically quoted in the final showdown.
  • Tarantino originally planned a non-linear narrative structure for the film.
  • The shootout scene towards the end of the film was often quoted, even though it was an homage to John Woo, for example in Der Eisbär , Domino or Basta - Red Wine or Dead .
  • Hans Zimmer's dominant film music is based heavily on Hans Neusidler's street hit in Gunild Keetman's arrangement for the Orff-Schulwerk . This piece is also included in the soundtrack to the film Badlands - Shattered Dreams , which Quentin Tarantino inspired to write the screenplay for True Romance .
  • Screenwriter Tarantino originally wanted Joan Cusack and director Scott Drew Barrymore to play the role of Alabama Withman.
  • Tom Sizemore was actually intended for the role of the killer Virgil. Since he did not want to take on a scene of violence against Patricia Arquette, he suggested James Gandolfini for the role.
