Badlands - Zerschossene dreams is a drama / road movie by Terrence Malick from the year 1973 . In his first feature film, Malick shows an amoral couple, played by Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek , who murderously roam the South Dakota in the 1950s.

Kit Carruthers is 25 years old. He argues with the father of his 15-year-old friend Holly Sargis from Fort Dupree, South Dakota , who does not approve of the relationship and eventually kills him.

Kit and Holly initially live in the forest, but are caught there and flee through the USA. Many more murders follow before they reach Montana . The vigilante groups and the national guard are now protecting public life in numerous cities .

The fugitives break into a rich man's house where they spend a few hours. They lock him and his servants. Kit takes his car and a few other things that are later partially buried.

A helicopter tracks down Kit and Holly. Holly doesn't want to flee any further and therefore argues with Kit. This in turn shoots a policeman and flees by car. Holly is arrested.

After a few kilometers, Kit gives up. One of the cops says Kit looks like James Dean . Kit later talks to the policemen guarding him in a very friendly and calm manner. A plane brings the detainees back to South Dakota.

Holly's voice tells that she will get away with a suspended sentence and marry her lawyer's son. Kit will be executed six months after the trial.

  • Peter Stack wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1998 that the film is still unique today ("Among the great American crime movies, 1973's" Badlands "stands alone"). The atmosphere and the images are “gorgeously filmed”. He praised the game by Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek.
  • Vincent Canby recognized in the New York Times on October 15, 1973 an "immense talent" of the directorial debutant and called the film "extremely important and exciting" ("Badlands is a most important and exciting film").
  • Lexicon of the international film : “ Late Western , who deals intensely with America's violent trauma, and for this purpose sometimes uses blatant staging means that are by no means an end in themselves .” The authors mean the “ Vietnam trauma of the USA”.

  • The plot is partly based on a true story: 18-year-old Charles Starkweather and his 14-year-old girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate, like Kit and Holly, terrified the American Midwest in 1957/58 with a series of murders. Starkweather's declared idol was James Dean, a motif that is also taken up in Badlands, because Kit also tries to resemble the star.
  • The film was Terrence Malick's first feature film . It was filmed in Colorado from May 1973 to July 1973 on a budget of $ 450,000 .
  • The director can be seen on the screen for a few minutes in conversation with Martin Sheen: As the key figure, he wants to speak to the rich man who is being held hostage, but is reluctant to leave a note on the doorstep.
