John Carter (born November 26, 1927 in Center Ridge , Arkansas , † May 23, 2015 ) was an American actor .

Life

Carter grew up as the older brother of Conlan Carter on a farm in Missouri . To become an actor, he went to New York, where he married and got his first roles as an extra. The roles quickly grew; after his divorce, Carter moved to Los Angeles . From 1967 he received guest roles in various television series such as Smoking Colts , Bonanza and Hawaii Five-Zero . He also performed at the “Theater West”, where he also met his second wife, Kendall Fewel. On Broadway (and Off-Broadway) he was best known for roles in Edward Albee plays. Carter made his film debut in 1969 in the science fiction film Lost in Space by John Sturges in a minor supporting role as an aviator. He played other supporting roles in the Western Monte Walsh and in Andromeda - Deadly Dust from Space . He gained greater fame with the US public through his portrayal of Lt. John Biddle in the crime series Barnaby Jones , whom he played in 95 episodes from 1973 to 1980. Between 1983 and 1986 he had a recurring guest role as Max Hartman in the series Falcon Crest and in the miniseries The Firestorm , he played Colonel William Forrest . Between 1995 and 2001 he appeared as Judge Harlan Newfield in Law & Order . His last film appearance was in Lasse Hallström's drama The Hoax in 2006 .
