In 1971, the writer Clifford Irving and his colleague Richard Suskind wrote fictional interviews with the legendary billionaire Howard Hughes and offered them to the McGraw-Hill publishing house for publication. Despite doubts and reservations, the publisher accepts Irving's offer and publishes the forged text as a biography authorized by Hughes. Irving succeeds in collecting a million US dollars from the publisher for the rights. The fraud is exposed when the public-shy Hughes unexpectedly speaks up on a conference call. Irving and Suskind are sentenced to prison terms.

The film was shot in New York , Puerto Rico and California . Its production amounted to an estimated 25 million US dollars . The film had its world premiere on October 15, 2006 at a film festival in Rome . Since April 6, 2007 it has been shown in selected cinemas in the USA. The widespread release in US theaters began on April 20, 2007. The big bluff , the German dubbed version, was released on DVD in 2009.
