The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is an American fantasy film by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston based on a screenplay by Ashleigh Powell and Simon Beaufoy , which was released in German cinemas on November 1, 2018 and in US cinemas the following day. The film is based on ETA Hoffmann's story Nutcracker and Mouse King and on Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker .

Young Clara has only just lost her mother and does not think she can get over her grief. When she tries to open her mother's music box and her godfather Drosselmeyer helps, Clara is drawn into a magical world. She learns that she is a princess in the mysterious parallel world and also the heir to the throne. When she learns that a dark power is threatening the empires, she summons up all her courage to defend her kingdom. She meets all sorts of strange inhabitants: for example the sugar fairy who rules the land of sweets and helps Clara to discover her true potential; Hagedorn, the ruler of the flower country and tries to keep the peace in the kingdom; and Shiver, the ruler of the land of snowflakes. She also meets the Nutcracker, Phillip, the leader of the Royal Guard, who is impressed by Clara's courage and determination and becomes her best friend. Together they go in search of Mother Ginger, the mistress of the fourth empire, who once took over the country with her army, a legion of mice and a gigantic, mechanical porcelain doll.

The project was first announced on March 4, 2016 and Lasse Hallström confirmed as director.
On July 27, 2016, it was announced that Mackenzie Foy will play the lead role Clara .
The costumes were designed by two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beavan , who most recently worked in this capacity for Disney for Christopher Robin . These will be on display at Vue Cinema in Watford between October 29 and November 5, 2018 .
The film music was composed by James Newton Howard and was recorded by the Philharmonia Orchestra in London with the renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel . The soundtrack to the film, which includes 17 pieces of music, including the Nutcracker Suite played by Lang Lang and the song Fall On Me sung by Andrea Bocelli and Matteo Bocelli , was released on October 26, 2018 by Walt Disney Records. Overall, James Newton Howard had worked on the soundtrack for a year and a half, for which he said he used Tchaikovsky's music for around 20 percent. In doing so, he tried to keep the musical language of the Nutcracker alive throughout the film, so that it sounds like parts of the Nutcracker that people just didn't know before.
The film was released in German cinemas on November 1, 2018, and in US cinemas the following day. The film had its US premiere on October 29, 2018 in Hollywood.
Before the premiere, Disney Press released The Nutcracker and the Four Realms: The Secret of the Realms - Extended Novelization , a companion book to the film in October 2018. This was designed by Meredith Rusu and is based on the script by Ashleigh Powell .
Age rating
In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK without any age restriction. The statement of reasons for approval states: “The elaborate film has a friendly, warm atmosphere and focuses on positive figures of identification. Even small children can follow the story and understand the conflicts. There are several imaginative fight scenes and slight moments of fright that can be emotionally challenging for preschoolers. However, these scenes are always softened by relieving elements, so that lasting anxiety is not to be feared. In addition, many cheerful moments as well as the long happy ending contribute to the relief. ”In a criticism by the dpa it is stated that the adversities Clara has to struggle with are not without:“ When Clara and the nutcracker Phillip dare to visit Mother Ginger , the directors work with elements like from a horror film . Horror clowns, laughing wildly, roll, dance and hop around. Soldiers are swallowed by the ground. And a chain carousel crashes with a roar. Images that are likely to frighten younger and more sensitive children. "
