Jack Peter Benedict Whitehall (born July 7, 1988 in Westminster , London ) is a British comedian , television presenter and actor . He is best known as a stand-up comedian as well as the representations of J. P. in the television series Fresh Meat , Alfie Wickers in the television series Bad Education , where he also participated as co-author, and when Francois Lemaire in Thunderbirds Are Go known .

From 2012 to 2017 he was a regular participant in the panel show A League of Your Own and from 2013 to 2015 he hosted the talk show Backchat together with his father Michael .

Life

Jack Whitehall was born as the first son of actress Hilary Amanda Jane Isbister, stage name Hilary Gish, and television producer Michael John Whitehall in Portland Hospital in Westminster , London . His father was an acting agent for Colin Firth , Richard Griffiths , Michael Fassbender , Daniel Day Lewis , Nigel Havers and Dame Judi Dench ; the late Griffiths was his godfather alongside Nigel Havers . Whitehall has a sister, Molly Louisa (born 1989), and a brother, Barnaby William (born 1992).

He attended Tower House School in East Sheen, West London, where he was a classmate of actor Robert Pattinson , who became famous with the Twilight saga . This was followed by the Dragon School in Oxford and later Marlborough College , a private school in Wiltshire .

After school, Whitehall took a year off to try stand-up comedy. He attended the University of Manchester for two semesters to study art history. According to his own statements, one of his role models is the comedian Jack Dee, whom he once met as a teenager.

From 2011 to 2017 he was in a relationship with actress Gemma Chan , whom he met while producing Fresh Meat .

Career

Whitehall first appeared in front of the camera at the age of five; he had a role in The Good Guys in 1993 and played Ben Wiston in Noah's Ark in 1997 .

Whitehall made one of his first stand-up comedy appearances during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the Comedy Reserve of the Pleasance Theater in Edinburgh . He was also nominated for the 2008 Chortle Award in the Best Newcomer category and was a finalist in the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year.

In June 2008 he presented the first week of Big Brother's Big Mouth on E4 and the twelfth week of the format in August. His first appearances in 8 Out of 10 Cats on Channel 4 followed in September and November .

In January 2009 he again took over the moderation of Celebrity Big Brother's Big Mouth and was a guest on The Sunday Night Project , followed by a third appearance in 8 Out of 10 Cats on June 5th; that same month he co-hosted the satirical "TNT Show with Holly Walsh" on Channel 4. He appeared on Charlie Brooker's panel show You Have Been Watching in August, and appeared on the panel show for the first time in September Would I Lie to You? part. In addition to his first appearance on the BBC two- panel show Mock the Week , he was guest presenter of an episode of Never Mind the Buzzcocks in October 2009 .

With his first own stand-up show, Nearly Rebellious , he performed again at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh in August 2009 and was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award in the category 'Best Newcomer' that same year.

On March 30, 2010, Whitehall attended Channel 4's Comedy Gala, a charity show benefiting Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, which was recorded live at the O2 Arena in London and broadcast on April 5. This was followed by appearances at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal in July and further appearances with his second show Learning Difficulties at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh in August. On September 27th, his appearance at the Apollo Hammersmith was recorded for the sixth season of Live at the Apollo, which aired on December 17th. The Variety named Whitehall one of the "Ten Most Prestigious Future Stars" in 2010.

In January 2011, Whitehall was nominated for a British Comedy Award in the Best Comedy Breakthrough category. On March 12th, along with Dara Ó Briain and Jon Richardson, he received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the 'Highest stand up comedy gig in the world' during a British Airways flight the world) in favor of Comic Relief. On May 24th, he attended Channel 4's second annual Comedy Gala, which aired on June 10th.

In August 2011 Whitehall took part again with two shows at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh: it was the prelude to his third stand-up program Let's Not Speak of This Again . He also hosted the four episode stand-up talk show Backchat at the side of his father Michael , which received very good reviews.

This was followed by appearances on the first season of Dave's One Night Stand on comedy broadcaster Dave and the recording of his stand-up show at London's Haymarket Theater, in which other well-known stand-up comedians had guest appearances. In November 2011, Whitehall gave two sold out shows at the Hammersmith Apollo, which also received very good reviews. These two shows ended his first national tour, Let's Not Speak of This Again .

In February 2014, Whitehall was a guest on BBC auto magazine Top Gear and drove on the Top Gear test track after having only driven a car once before. On October 24, 2014, Whitehall hosted the Feeling Nuts Comedy Night on Channel 4, which was dedicated to testicular cancer prevention.

In December 2014, he made a guest appearance on the second season of the Peter Gabriel parody Brian Pern: A Life in Rock , which aired on BBC Two. In 2015 he played the posh backpacker Hugo in the episode La Couchette of the anthology series Inside No. 9 .

In 2016, Whitehall made her debut in American cinema in a supporting role in the film Mother's Day , opposite Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston .

The following year, he starred as a bounty hunter on the BBC One series Decline and Fall alongside Eva Longoria and David Suchet, and appeared with his father in the Netflix documentary Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father , in which they five Traveled Thailand , Cambodia and Vietnam for weeks .

On December 8, 2017, Whitehall was announced as the new host of the BRIT Awards 2018, replacing Dermot O'Leary and Emma Willis . Also in 2018 he played the harlequin in the Disney film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms .

In 2019, filming began on Disney's Jungle Cruise , in which Whitehall played the first openly gay character in a Disney film. The cast of Whitehall for the role of McGregor Houghton led to controversy in the run-up to the shooting of the film, which will be released in July 2020, as Whitehall was cast as a straight actor who could also " cast stereotypes " as a comedian .

In 2019 he played the role of Newton Pulsifer in the six-part BBC series Good Omens produced for Amazon Prime , an adaptation of the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett .

Controversy

In September 2009, Whitehall was accused for his critically acclaimed up stand- -Show Nearly Rebellious elements from the program by Stewart Lee stole to have; the program, which comedically dealt with the afterlife in space, was performed in the 1990s at the Comedy Festival "Just for Laughs" in Montreal and was recorded by the Comedy Network for television. Whitehall's 2009 version on the "Edinburgh Fringe" was described as an "almost unchanged repetition" of Lee's original, apart from a favorable review for Metro.

On October 20, 2009, Robbie Williams was accused of stealing one of Whitehall's jokes in his "comeback" appearance as part of the BBC Electroproms at the Camden Roundhouse. When Whitehall originally played the one-liner that plays with the particle verb “to look down on someone,” he was voted the fifth best joke of the year on the Edinburgh Fringe in a Dave TV poll.

On June 20, 2010, a photo of Whitehall appeared in the press showing him using cocaine in Manchester ; he apologized for his behavior, but did not confirm or deny the allegations made against him. During a joint appearance with the British comedian Patrick Kielty, he later alluded to the press coverage.

Whitehall made derogatory remarks about Queen Elizabeth II on the television show Big Fat Quiz of the Year on December 30, 2012 ; As a result, there were numerous complaints to the UK's Office of Communications (Ofcom) and claims that Whitehall should not appear as a laudator at the 18th National Television Awards in 2013. To counteract speculation, the organizers were forced to confirm Whitehall's participation in a press release; he presented the category "Most Popular Comedy Panel Show".
