The women's javelin at the European Athletics Championships in 1966 was held on September 2 and 3, 1966 in Budapest's Népstadion .

The GDR thrower Marion Lüttge became the European champion . She won ahead of the Romanian Olympic champion from 1964 Mihaela Peneș . Bronze went to Valentina Popova from the Soviet Union.

Record improvement

European champion Marion Lüttge improved the existing EM record in qualifying on September 2nd by 3.68 m to 59.70 m. Germany Democratic Republic 1949GDR

As fifteenth, Angéla Ránky retired from the qualification - under her name Angéla Németh, she became Olympic champion two years later

The sixteen participants took part in a joint qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 50.00 m. Since only eleven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athlete to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 49.74 m was enough for the final.
