Jelena Gorchakova (1964)

Jelena Jegorowna Gortschakowa ( Russian Елена Егоровна Горчакова , English transcription Yelena Gorchakova ; born May 17, 1933 in Moscow ; † January 27, 2002 ) was a Soviet javelin thrower .

At the age of 19 she won the bronze medal in the javelin throw behind the Czechoslovak Dana Zátopková (50.47 m) and her teammate Alexandra Tschudina (50.01 m) at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki with a width of 49.76 m . Although she was among the best in the world year after year, she was unable to qualify for further international championships for a long time because the competition in the Soviet Union was extremely fierce.

In the 1960s Gorchakova reappeared more and more. At the Universiade in Sofia in 1961 she won the gold medal in front of the Romanian Maria Diaconescu and the German Almut Brömmel . The following year she finished eighth at the European Athletics Championships in Belgrade . In 1963 she became the Soviet champion. She experienced the high point of her international career at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, twelve years after her first participation in the Olympics. In the qualification she threw the javelin to 62.40 m and exceeded the world record of her compatriot Elvīra Ozoliņa by 2.66 m. Ozoliņa had already reached 61.38 m in the same year, but this achievement was not officially recognized. Seen in this way, Gortschkowa's attempt was the first over 60 m by a woman. In the final, however, she did not achieve a comparable performance. She did not get past 57.06 m and had to be content with third place behind the Romanian Mihaela Peneș (60.54 m) and the Hungarian Márta Rudas (58.27 m).

After that she became Soviet champion again in 1965 and finished fourth at the European Athletics Championships in Budapest in 1966 .
